Wahoo! We’re off this afternoon for a great camping trip over the long holiday weekend. The weather is supposed to be great, lots of good food, great fishing and swimming down at the lake, canoing, kayaking, guitar sing-a-longs around the campfire, what more could one ask?
The campground is run by the Christian Reformed Church and they always provide lots of activities for everyone, games, hikes, stories, hayrides, concerts, a talent show on Saturday night, a pig roast on Sunday afternoon. We always take the unicycle trailer and the kids of the campground love to try them out on the grassy playground. Ben and Brad will do a unicycle performance for the talent show and I’ll probably sing a solo of somesorts, maybe a duet if my counterpart happens to be camping this weekend.
One of my favorite parts is cooking a turkey on the tripod over the campfire. Steve (machinehead61) and Patty usually come out for the day on Saturday. She is one awesome cook and does the roasting honors. Patty covers the tripod from the grate level to the top point with aluminum foil, suspends a turkey and keeps the fire in the pit going for 4 to 6 hours. It’s one delicious bird! Can’t wait!
It’ll be a very relaxing weekend. Getting away on the weekend is always the hard part for me because I’ve got so, so much to do at home. But once drive in the gate, we always wonder what took us so long to get there. I’ve always said, “Camping is not wasting time, it’s spending time doing nothing.”
Sounds like you’re already gone so this advice is a bit late. We’re not as “Dutch” anymore but if they give you any grief just say your last name is: JOEPERS. It will still be pronounced the same way. Forget about Edwards, they’ll see right through Vander Edwards.
You can also play “Dutch Bingo”. It’s sort of like six degrees of separation: If you go back far enough we’re all related.
Wow, what a perfect weekend. The weather was absolutely great especially for sleeping at night, no humidity, no bugs to speak of, great company, good food, and lots of activities for the boys and plenty of relaxin’ for Mom and Dad. We went with Steve and Patty O’Connor (machinehead61). Patty’s an excellent cook so we had huge amounts of wonderful camp vittles. Check out Steve’s water balloon launcher photos in the gallery (link below). It was a real big hit among the kids of the camp.
As always, we took the unicycle trailer and as soon as we pulled in, word spread around the campground that the unicycles were here. We met one boy, Dan, who learned to ride on our unicycles about three years ago at camp. He hasn’t ridden since but by the second day this weekend, he was up on both the Coker and the 6’ giraffe.
Ben and Brad performed in the talent show on Saturday night. They received lots of ooh’s and aahs and applause. I didn’t do any music for the talent show but I did do some guitarin’ around the main campground campfire after the ice cream social on Sunday night.
Dog Abby had a good time. She doesn’t get out much so it was a real treat for her to spend a weekend in the great outdoors.
Now it’s back to the grind but I don’t mind so much. I feel great after a restful weekend.
That’s a pretty good fit. (Picture’s in our recent gallery). I looked at a couple websites since you gave me the species and they say that the insect is often mistaken for a bee or a wasp by the style and pattern of it’s flight.
I’d say that we have a winner…the squash vine borer.
