I would like to add some comments about Dan’s experience in the Seattle = to
Portland Bicycle Classic (STP).

The bicycle community was very supportive of Dan’s participation, = offering
lots of praise, admiration, pats on the back, and frequent = comments like “Oh
My Gawd!” At a rest stop midway through the second = day, about a dozen hard
core cyclists came over, knelt around his = unicycle and bowed to it. At the
start of the event, it is safe to say = that few if any cyclists thought Dan
would finish the race. It was = interesting to see that assumption change near
the end of the first day, = and even more so as the second day progressed. I
learned that the most = common question at the finish line was: “Has anyone
heard how the = unicyclist is doing?” Many also learned the special challenges
of = unicycling long distance. For instance, Dan would waste most cyclists = on
the uphill climbs, but they coasted by him on the downhills when Dan = had to
put out extra effort.

Dan considered this ride a part of his training for the even longer = Unicycle
Across Minnesota benefit for MS to be held August 14-22. Dan = totaled about 25
hours on his unicycle during the STP…and we all know = how hard that is on
your butt. It is now time for all good (and = learning) unicyclists to get off
your butts and support the Minnesota = ride if you haven’t already done so. Over
thirty unicyclists are = training for this ride and your support (and that of
your friends) will = make this worthwhile for them, and benefit a great charity
too. For = more information, check out the web site =
http://www.skypoint.com/~cotter/ or send your donations to Unicycle = Across
Minnesota, PO Box 21487, Minneapolis, MN 55421.

You can also e-mail Dan if you have any questions about his experiences = on the
STP ride. Hope to see some of you at NUC in a couple weeks. = Thanks for your
support. Bill Heaton
