There was recently a thread on 661 shoes, specifically the durability of the Taki sole. I chimed in saying i thought it was a durable sole and held up to the pins on pedals well. I have been riding this shoe since may on DK pedals with smooth-sided grip pins. They held up well. Recently i switched to a pedal with threaded pins (threads exposed on grippy part). The shoes are being destroyed very quickly. I only MUni and have put probably 75 miles on the soles with these more aggressive pins. They are holding up poorly at best. I am suprised at how quickly the sole is ripping to shreds from the more aggressive pins. I like the shoe for the most part but durability is lacking for the Taki sole. I am considering the Five Ten Impact when these shoes finally die, which may not be long. Has any one else experienced this lack of durability with this type of grip pin?
I’ve got a pair of Five Ten Impacts and I’m really impressed. I was looking at 661 Duallys but changed my mind after a few people suggested they might not be that durable. I’ve done a few hundred miles of muni/xc on the Impacts now and there’s not even a mark on the soles. I’m using DMR V8 pedals, so a mixture of smooth and threaded pins (the corner ones are threaded, middle ones are straight but still pretty sharp) - they shredded my previous pair of boots I used for riding. Quite pricey (about £60 in the UK) but I’d recommend them to anybody.

I use Walmart’s Brahma steel-toe work shoes for muni with threaded pins, and they hold up surprisingly well.
