661 4x4

Hi all! I had 3 very old pairs of 661 4x4 knee/shin guards that we’re so worn out that I was getting ready to throw them away. So instead, I decided to restore them with new elastic straps and velcro, but the worst part was the knee area, which was totally worn out with little to no remaining protection in case of a bad fall.

So, after replacing all the elastic and velcro, I purchased some 16th inch thick ABS plastic, cut and molded to cover the knee area, with 1/2" thick closed cell polyethylene foam inserts that replace the old foam. I made the inserts so they’re attached with velcro for easy removal for washing. Btw, each leg guard now only requires 4 closures: 2 top straps and 2 calf closures. That’s one less per leg guard than KH, so they’re now super fast on/off.

My question is, since there is no marking on these leg guards, I can’t tell which one is left or right! Does anyone know if the flaps are supposed to go toward the inside of the leg or toward the outside of the leg?

I don’t know which is which. But I’d say on a uni the flaps should face toward the outside, so that they don’t open, should they touch the tire.

I did the same with my KH knee/leg guards. I forgot which was the correct side and kept with that logic.

The flaps should be pulled/fastened away from your body center. The other way around would be more awkward when using right hand for right side, etc. Also, they might rub when cycling otherwise indeed.
