50 mile coker ride tomorrow wOOt!

Me, Jim (Munivision) and Jamey (Unicycle6969) will be kicking off about a 6+ hour ride on our 36ers Saturday morning starting at 8am, at the beginning of the Torrance Beach Bike path. Total mileage will be just shy of 50 miles roundtrip!

We won’t be attempting to break any speed records, since it’s a bike path with lots of people darting in and out. This will be part of Jim’s qualifying ride for RTL, and possibly Jamey’s as well. I’m going for the sheer fun of it!

Anybody else wanting to join in the fun PM asap. Must have at least a 29er; it’s gonna be a long haul! :sunglasses:

Darn I’m busy and I do not have a coker.:frowning:

Hey, I’ll be doing similar on the American River Bike Path in Sacramento, for the same reason. Have a great ride! I’ll be starting from my house, riding the 2.5 miles or so to the bike path, then taking it all the way to the downtown terminus (Old Sacramento). Then I will turn around and head back, possibly switching unicycles somewhere along the way. I’ll be starting out on Robert Allen’s Nimbus 36 with Schlumpf hub, which is okay on the flats but makes my legs tired after a while because I’m not used to pushing a big gear.

Anyway my plan is to ride all the way to the other end of the bike path, at Beals Point (Folsom Lake). Then I have to turn around and at least ride back down the 300’ or so of dam height back into central Folsom. Once I’ve gone 85 km it should be enough for my first day. I hope to be joined by at least one other guy on a Coker, and maybe Jacquie on her bike…

Then on Sunday I’m riding Mt. Diablo, 3300’ up in 11 miles, then back down.

Good luck and enjoy your rides, all!

Unfortunately today’s 50 miler has been cancelled. Jim’s sick with a bad cold, and the confirmed weather reports are calling for THIRTY MPH gale-force winds, and possible thundershowers! I like a challenge, but pushing a coker through 30 mph headwinds-for 24 miles-is not my idea of fun! :frowning:

Well, Jim has a valid excuse, but, jeez.

As my wife, Rose, so sympathetically told me after I complained of a swirling blizzard (!!) halfway through our first qualifying day, “Suck it up!”

Get out there and tough it out. You want me to polish the ground in front of your tire, so it won’t be too bumpy for you? :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m sure there’ll be no wind at all on the coast of the Atlantic province of Nova Scotia.

just kidding

sort of.

squeek, squeek, squeek

Gail force winds in your face for at least 25 miles–or more? No thanks. :o
Jim was qualifying, not me lol! I’m just gonna drop into sullivan canyon for a 10 mile MUni as consolation! :sunglasses:

It amazes me how quickly weather conditions can increase the average heartrate while unicycling. I got my 36er because my 26er was less efficient than running when I decided to start commuting to work by wheel. But when it’s windy and rainy even my 36er burns more calories on a ride in than running!

One of these days I would love to have the chance to join you on a ride in such a beautiful sunny area as yours. Can’t wait to hear how the RTL qualifiying ride eventually goes for y’all. I’m not doing RTL but am getting my “qualification ride” from last weekend written up anyways

Hey, I had some pretty strong winds on my way back home during my qualifying ride and that didn’t stop me.

Yeah, but I’m not qualifying. And I don’t let weather stop me in most cases, in this case, wind strong enough to uproot trees isn’t my idea of fun, which is why I was riding in the first place lol!:stuck_out_tongue:

too bad I don’t live closer to you, and too bad the ride got cancelled I was going to go on a ride today but my schedule filled up with chores and web work and such… so it will have to wait until next weekend when the calendar says my schedule is free.

Well, with access to a support vehicle to either pick you up or drop you off, and knowing which way the wind is blowing, a 50 mile ride with the wind behind you all the way should take next to no time!

STM

Its not bad. I was in the same situation, but with hail hitting me, and I rode 35 miles in that.
