I’ll be getting my Muni in a week or so (SEM XLW 24) and I could have it
with a 48 holes suzue hub and SUN BRF 48 spokes for an extra 15 USD. Is
it worth it ? I guess so but I saw on unicycle.com that even strong
munis seem to come with 36 spokes ? What would you recommend ? 48 spokes
will had strength to the unit but I was wondering if there was any
drawbacks like heavier wheel, etc.
With a good rim a 48 spoke wheel is not necessary. Getting a 48 spoke hub will only end up limiting your future rim choices because there are not very many downhill or freeride rims available with 48 holes. I would go with the 36 spoke option.
I’d also consider getting the Alex DX32 rim instead of the BFR. I’m pretty sure that the Gazz 2.6 will fit well on the DX32 rim.
My muni is 48-spoke in a 4-cross pattern, I understand this pattern
makes the wheel more springy/resilient under vertical compression/shock,
which seems like a good idea for a muni. For a bloater like me it certainly
seems like a good idea. I’ve broken a spoke now and then but have no
complaints.

It’s pretty unlikely that any change in spoke pattern will be felt as
a change in ride characteristics. The amount of spoke deflection under
load is orders of magnitude smaller than tire deflection under load.
A 48-spoke wheel will probably prove less likely to taco under stress,
which is good in a different way.

Thanks for all the posts. I also talked with a couple of friends of mine who
are dohwnhiller and MtB’ers and I’ve decided to go for the 36. Main reason :
Availability of 24" rims with 48 holes. I searched a little bit on the
internet and couln’t find many of them… I’ve decided to assume a greater
risk of tacoing the wheel but, in counterpart, should it happen, I’ll be
able to get my Muni on the road more quickly and possibly at a lower cost…
Thanks again !
Christian.
