The 42nd traverse is one of the best mountain bike rides in New Zealand. It is about 44km long and threads through the Tongariro forest with amazing views of the surrounding mountains and some awesome riding.
A month or so back I did the traverse with a few mountain bikers. I’ve finally got an album up to show off some of the photos. I have no time yet to write a complete description of the trip I’m afraid. Perhaps I’ll write if for the next OOW.
The ride follows a four wheel drive track and crosses several streams and one river. Around half the ride is uphill and you do almost as much climbing as you do down hill. There are some really steep technical descents which are very
challenging and a total blast to unicycle down. The track is 99.5% rideable on a unicycle with the last 0.5% being extremely steep uphill.
Really nice photos! Great work making it across that creek. I’ve had a lot of trouble with crossing creeks that have any more than about 10cm of water and aren’t too long. It’s just too slippery.
Great photos Peter. Last time I was in that area on a cycletour, we were
stuck for 3 days in the tent in a huge storm - lots of flooding and millions
of $ damage. Looks totally different in your photos!
