I need to get rid of this.

I don’t know anything about aftermarket unicycle rims. Is this something I could lace up to the stock hub of a KH36?

It would be fun to try a carbon rim if it would be compatible. Unfortunately, my truing stand would be thoroughly worthless for a 36” wheel.

I used a KH spirit hub and 367mm spokes when I build mine some years back. I just 4 crossed the spokes to match the smaller ERD of the carbon rim. If 367mm really is standard KH36 spoke length I’m not 100% sure. But +/- 2mm might also work. Sounds like a fun project (and I don’t see what you need a truing stand for. A unicycle fork turned upside down in a bike stand or a wise is fine truing stand by itself)

I don’t want to scupper any deals on this, really I don’t – but just be sure you heed the above advice and know some of the history of the Nextie 36" rims, tyre compatibility etc so you know what you’re taking on – there is a few threads on this rim (one of which is very long) which may have been before you joined the forum.

Yes, I will require any buyer to message me indicating they understand the risks with this rim.

I am trying to read up on this. So far all I have seen is one blow out and a lot of speculation. Does the situation with the hookless rims ever evolve into anything more serious?

After spending an unexpected hour of my morning trying to understand what “do your research” meant, I have found multiple blowoffs on the hookless rims, and multiple on the hooked rims from this company’s 36” rims. The rim for sale here is one of the OG hookless rims from before anyone started reporting issues. The first reported blowout issue from a forum member seemed to spook the seller into unbuilding the wheel he built with this rim. He set the rim aside and commented about intent to sell years ago, quipping that maybe he could get $20 for it. Hammer and Pierrox are the only firsthand accounts I saw of this rim working in the long-term, though Pierrox reports a third user that is not a part of this forum. Hammer used a Vee tire, while Pierrox used a Niterider lite. There was some speculation that the Vee tire might be safer due to having a different bead profile and better fitment. There was a lot of misinformation and denial on the part of the manufacturer, and they do not appear to be generally well-regarded by the community. I am sure this list is not exhaustive, and I am probably missing stuff, but I just wanted to provide some information transparently so people can understand the situation without committing their morning to it. I think I will pass after all, because I am happy enough with the 36er I’ve got, and the whole thing has left a sour taste in my mouth. This is for the next guy that comes along.

To be honest I can’t really remember all the details, some people had good results, others less so. There were different results with different tyres and also adding tape in the rim as far as I remember.

To be honest, I think it is a good deal if you would like to experiment with a carbon rim and are aware of the history and can mitigate against any mishaps – I just thought from your post regarding lacing and truing the wheel that you probably weren’t aware of the history.

I most certainly did not know the history, and had no way of knowing what “research” I was supposed to be doing. I thought research meant verifying fitment (which is what my original question was speaking to), or maybe exploring the availability of Presta-valved 36” tubes. Not saying this deal isn’t for anybody; just not for me.

I agree with all above. For what it’s worth I’ve not had a blowoff with this using a Nightrider Lite tire but this was setup primarily for muni with no more than 25 psi. I think the risks of a blowoff significantly increase with higher pressures.

Yep no problem with mine, but I haven’t ridden it a lot lately. And never with more than 2.5 bars - about 35 psi - as I don’t go super fast. Also, my tire was new when I installed it on the rim, don’t know if it makes a difference that it had never been put onto a rim before hand.
