3 months of rep

I think is great, people can have a reputation without haveing little green (or red) Boxes. Some times people would give rep without givving a coment and i wouldent know what i did. How about being able to comment but not give rep!

Microsoft is actually working on that technology as part of their WE-SYP project.

Here’s a streamable video that explains it: WE-SYP Project Video
The video is 17 MB and will require a high speed connection to play

If that link doesn’t work then paste the following link http://www.codeproject.com/redir.asp?id=1364 into Windows Media Player (launch Windows Media Player and go File >> Open URL)

It’s a funny video.

I can see possibilities for using that technology to get revenge on people who make bad posts here.

Just wait until the virus writers find how to exploit that.

i don’t think there’s anything wrong with the rep system or the post count being misused…it doesn’t really mean anything, but it can be fun to count your posts and say, woohoo, I reached post x!!
well, okay, the rep system being misused could be bad. but come on, why take away the post count? even you must admit, jagur, you do like knowing how many you have.

I agree with Maestro on that point in his post (but not the ‘other one’).
A fair trial for the rep system would be to let it run until people stopped talking about it and making threads about it.

I’d like to see it switched back on again.
With a couple of modifications, if possible.
I’d like to see the ‘points per rep’ reduced and the anonymity of the system removed.

Well, there is a certain incentive for the developers to make sure that cannot happen.

I agree, people misusing it would get tired of it eventually, and stop giving out rep for stupid things. but then every once in a while, you’d see a post that makes you go, wow, that really was a great post. and then the rep would truly show who deserves it.
oh, also, if rep is only given once in a while for a post that really is good, then we could have a contest for the individual post that gets most rep, rather than the person!!

If you think they will be able to get used to the constant electric charge they are going to endure.

the post count was taken away a long time ago and the forums became a better place because of it… now that they are back with the new style fora, all im suggesting is going back to the way it was 3 months ago. you can all ways find post count in a profile, it was better that way.

as for me caring about how many i have…please dont speak for me… i dont care and havent cared since, like Rep… post count became competative…

i know you secretly are lusting of mutiple orgasims when you hit 10,000 so dont come off all toodley-pipsky…you know you want it right where all can see and the thought of not having it out in the open for all to see would put you in a situation of having to say it without saying it…droping sacastic post count quips in the hope that the master 10,000 got his due reply.

if one had to look it up, then it would fade quickly,… leave you bitter,… feeling as if you had not been givin your just reward.

So James dont speak for me, lest i speak for you.

Which you just did!?!
I’m confused.

I’ve actually been less helpful since the rep system was implemented. I’ve been making fewer posts in RSU and reading fewer of the threads over the past three months or so. One reason was because I was adding sites to the links section here. It takes a lot of time to do that and that was time that I couldn’t read or reply to posts. Another reason is that I’ve been busy with other things. So overall I’d have to say I’ve been less helpful since the rep system was implemented.

Another way to look at that is to say that the rep system didn’t encourage me to be more helpful and manage my time differently to maximize my rep. Spending time behind the scenes to do the links isn’t a good way to get rep. I got zero rep mentioning the links and I doubt anyone really noticed. If I wanted to maximize my rep it would have been a better strategy to start a thread in JC about depression. Then watch the rep points roll in trying the cheer me up.

So for the adults here the rep system was probably not a motivator to change posting style or habits. I viewed it as more of a motivator for the youngsters here to behave better and make more relevant posts. But it seems it was more of a game for them. So overall the rep system was nothing useful other than a topic for threads and discussion.

Gilby has a unique view of the rep system being admin and all. He can see who is giving and receiving rep and the messages that go along with them. If he says it has been a problem then I trust his judgement on that. There is evidence in the comments made in the various threads about the rep system that it was being abused by some. The forum is better without it.

The challenge now is to figure out how to better encourage the new and younger members not to act like AOL newbies posting useless fluff (OMG, me too!!!).

the rep system was useful for giving people a pat on the back when they posted something useful, but it just created too much drama and too much extra distraction.

I stil don’t get it.

If people want to bust a nut over having 17 green boxes, or 10,000 posts, et them.

Rep points and post count may be useless, but they dont hurt anything.

I pretty much know who gives good advice, and who doesn’t, it has nothing to do with post count, or rep points.

Having good rep at the very most meant you were “nice” not neccesarily smart.

Having many posts just means you have nothing better to do.

I don’t think the forum has been better in the past 3 months than it was before. It didn’t work well as a way for us to evaluate eachother.
It nice to be able to give someone a thumbs up once in a while though.

I think the argument (at least my argument) is that there’s a risk of some people letting the ‘quest’ for better rep or a higher post count influence what they post here in a bad way. Now that does affect all of us.

I wish there was some way to count the number of posts where all people do is ask for rep or tell the world that they’ve given rep to someone. The post count is a pretty obvious one: people going for quantity over quality. I know because I was once caught up in trying to post lots and lots just to have a high post count.

This only applies to a minority but it affects the majority.

Andrew

I think we should have rep and post count, having rep made me more careful about what I posted to make sure I would get good rep

Can this be made a poll?

This is not a democracy.
It’s a godbyocracy.

And thank Godb for that…

Does this mean I don’t have to read threads about rep any more? That’s a good thing. Though in here anything goes, there were also threads and mentions of rep in the unicycling side.

Rep was merely a popularity contest without judges. Arbitrary garbage in, with arbitrary garbage in terms of meaningfulness of a person’s score.

I agree with Jagur on the post count also. Anything that encourages people to post for reasons other than sharing something others might want to read, is not necessary. I prefer a cleaner interface, though I do like knowing where people are located, so it’s easier to help them when they ask questions and don’t say where they are so we can answer usefully.
