29" Discussion thread

Changes.

Made some more changes on the Nimbus…Bought new QuAx cranks (125 replacements & 114’s) Put on the Marathon Supreme and the 114’s thinking it would be fast. It might be once I get used to it, for now it is more difficult. So far I don’t like the 114’s but I think they will improve my skill…

And for the trails…

 I am very pleased to announce that I have a new place to put my Small Block 8…

I had been threatening to get a proper Muni for some time. Magura brake is on back order.

Wow - nice

I was just a 1/2hr ago pricing out a black and red 26" muni on UDC. Putting it together from parts. Blach hub, black rim silver spokes, red spoke nipples, red clamp and black and red seat, and red pedals.

Copy cat. J/K what size is that muni I can’t tell from the picture.

I really like my 2" Schwalbe BA, so imma thinking you are going to love that marathon supreme. I got the BA so I would have something to upgrade to when I could really appreciate it.

I felt like a new rider when I went to 125’s and a higher seat position. Took a couple of days but now it feels normal. Never say never, but i’m really liking the 125’s. Let us know how you like the 114’s as time goes on.

I like the 125’s best so far but I’m experimenting. Both uni’s are 29’s. If I had it all to do over again the blue one would be a 36.

I’m in no hurry to be any higher or go any faster than on my 29" so props to anyone who does ride those 36ers.

I’m closing in on 7mph average for an hour long ride. Not really trying to ride fast yet. Just been working on being smooth and light on the pedals and getting up to being able to do an hour long ride consitently.

Knees are feeling better so I added in two of the four training hills on my training ride and so far the knees seem to have survived that. The real test will be how they feel in the morning.

I know it’s more important to practice my static mount… but how do I trick this thing out? purple pedals? a new paint job? I like the elegance and simplicity of the colors in the last two pics… very classy! Nothing against the Nimbus paint, I like the white hub also! Maybe I could paint it Orange, or Grey to match the seat. Hmmm…

I’m probably going to get a 29er, but the only question I had was if they can handle the bumps on trails better than a 20 inch. I’ve tried light muni on my 20 but I keep getting bucked off. I suppose this will get better with practice, but I just wanted to know.

Shorten the brake cable… that would be a start

True. I’m also considering a KH handlebar before I do. is it a good or bad idea to use a handlebar for XC MUni?

the larger wheel rolls better over rough terrain. I found that I need much more practice and found that lowering my seat also helps a little. How are you getting bucked off? some obstacles need to be hopped onto and/or over if you can’t roll them.

very technical terrain deems a stronger 24-26" wheel and lots of hopping, but the 29er is fast and fun on smoother trails. I think wheel size lends itself to trail types and riding styles. Your 20" would be better for trials like hopping on rocks than speed for instance.

Don’t rely too much on hopping through technical terrain. I have found that on my 26" conundrum with the 3.8 Larry tire, I can roll over things I thought I’d have to stop and hop over… it keeps my flow going. If you can get the bodyweight shift down, you’ll be surprised at how well you can roll over large roots, rocks, etc. All you have to do is momentarily un-weight the uni on your down pedal stroke.

Color is a little muted. I think pedals, clamp and seat in anther color would be enough to trick it out a little bit. You already have the silver spoke nipples contrasting with the black rim, and you have the machined sidewalls so that all kinda already works together.

Otherwise, color shift paint always looks trick. Was a post recently by someone who painted their uni with color shift paint. They seemed pretty pleased with the results I think the poster also talked a bit about the kits available.

ALSA and Dupli-color seem to be the most well known rattle can color shift paint kits.

Now I’m thinking about this for my 24" which is just sitting right now.

Powder coat the frame yellow and it would brighten right up. There are many options though. I would roll with the seat, gray goes with anything and will match the tires. Pedals could change to match the scheme or at least lose the reflectors. I would focus on the frame and the rest will fall into place…Treat it to a color, a pattern or even a plating job (though that would take some work).
Uni’s tend to attract plenty of attention as it is so no need to create flash just pick a good scheme.

good

In my opinion anyway. If you don’t like it move it to a road machine. don’t have a road wheel? You will.

+1
Although I run it a bit shorter for xc trail than for road riding.
I particularly prefer how the brake handle lines up on the handle vs under the seat - I put the brake under the straight part of the handle just in front of the seat for easy grip and no need for a spooner.

I would say get white pedals and a white KH seat cover. Both the white and black look good against that blue. Keeps the parts looking like parts and the frame soulful.

Then add some scratches from working on your static mount.

I like the muted effect. Maybe the uni is less eye grabbing when you are riding it but it looks suave leaning against a wall with a cigarette in its mouth.

Yes! 20’s are more difficult to ride over bumps. On larger unicycles wheel size combined with the weight of the wheel keeps the unicycle much more stable and prevents it getting deflected by small bumps.

I am familiar with the “bucked off” sensation of a 20" and you will not feel it on a 29". You’ll still fall off of course but it won’t be as abrupt and it will take rougher terrain.

Wowser Deadbeatpope, really like your muni/uni, that tire, frame, seat and carrier go together well.
Especially the tire.

Brakes on a 29

Its interesting to see disc brakes on a 29"
I ride down some steep inclines on both my 29" and my 36".

With my 36" I have a set of hydraulic maguras HS33’s. Going down the steep inclines its easy to build up momentum that it too difficult to slowdown without brakes. I feel more confident with rapidly pumping the brake and releasing it to make it down the inclines.

With my 29" I feel more confident going down the same incline due to the smaller wheel size. No brake is required (or I’m just used to it).

On both my 29" and 36" I use the 125 cranks.

It will be interesting to see the development of disc brakes on the commuter brand unicycles.

I’m using the 29er for xc Muni and it’s a speedy little thing around town. I suppose I’ll put in a 110 hole for road riding and that’s where the disks will shine, bringing me back under control when I have little leverage. I guess that even with 150’s (when I’m good enough) to drag the brake rolling down a steep rock face the consistency of the disk will be huge. Pumping the maguras is one way to modulate the brakes, but with the infinite control of modulation that a disk brake brings to the situation, I’ve never had to pump the brake. I am biased, being part of the team that will be manufacturing these brakes so forgive my boast. Thanks for noticing that little detail! Now to trim the brake line!

a quick question for the 29er folks.

has anybody taken a different approach to getting more speed and put . . . oh lets say 80 mm cranks on their 29er? even if you’ve just tried it, how does it ride? I’ve been really tempted to put the 90mm ventures on the 36er just to see how ridiculous it felt. I feel like a brake would be necessary on it though

if you have a brake, do you think this is a viable option to be as fast as a big wheel? (granted, I don’t think I’d change, I love the big wheel)
