I will be doing a 24 hr Muni in May 06. I have never competed in any race at all. I’m really eager to put myself to the test, but I’m nervous about being ill prepared.
I’m hoping that some of you who have done similar races might have some pointers for me. Or, if any of you would simply like to share your experiences (good and bad). That would be pretty groovy too.
More clothes, food, repair stuff, and hydro then you think you will need.
A buddy who will be willing to hang out and take care you would be a good idea.Prepping food and your gear while you rest and eat/hydrate. Speaking of hydro, start a week before your test. Rest a bunch too. Good on ya for trying this. Bike magazine had an article on this stuff a few months back.
I have done 4 24hr races, the last one (where you will be) going solo.
Relax, don’t over stress yourself! North bay has the perfect trails for you, not only because they are great trails, but because they are very similar to the race track.
The best practice you can do is ride. Some days, ride long and steady (shoot for 4 hours) other days go for 1-2 hours and ride as hard as you can for as long as you can.
As the race approaches, ride a few hours apart, like say the weekends leading up to it, try to get in 4 rides of an hour or so each, to let your body get accustomed to getting your sorry tired as back on that thing and going for another ride!
Dry clothes for each lap, extra food and beers for in between laps, and it’s really the most fun you will have!
We will arrange a ride at the race location a few weeks before hand
Oh yeah, nice approach. I’d been avoiding the whole “Main Man” concept up to now, but I’ve started a list now and it’s you and JC. He made the list last weekend by ordering a second round of stout in the middle of an urban Coker ride.
Under your stated criteria, I’m already in deep training, should you need a backfill for unirene in the next Lifestyles. I’ll never be close to her equal in riding skill, but I had a decade of “food and beer” experience under my belt before she was born. And if a girl rider is required, perhaps I can convince Nurse Trixie to go in my stead…
We’d love to have you both, there is still room. We can even get you some Canadian beers for your laps There are no girls ‘required’ but are more than invited! [sniff…a main man!]
