After a week and a half of constant practice, I can now get around 150 feet on the 20" Nimbus X I bought for learning, and almost as far on a borrowed 24" Torker CX.
I’ve got some wonderful trails right behind my house, so next I’d like to try MUni.
Two questions:
When is too early to start working on MUni? What skills should I have before I even try?
Would a '07 24" Torker DX be an acceptable first MUni?
I know it’s kind of bottom of the heap as far as offroad unis go, and that the Kris Holm, Nimbus, and even newer ISIS Torker are all superior, but I’ve been offered a nearly new DX for $130 and it seems like a great deal. I’m 6’4, and think I’ll end up on a KH 26" eventually, but this seems like a decent one to beat on while learning.
Yah, you’ll be fine forever basically on the 24 DX, you’ll just want an upgrade for comfortability, quality, and weight eventually.
Learn how to ride as far as you need to with freemounting first and maybe hop before you start riding on trails. You can probably go without knowing freemounting even, just go one day and see if it’s impossibly difficult.

It’s never too early to start Muni. It’s a good idea to have at least kneepads, some gloves, and definitely a helmet. As far as kneepads go, volleyball pads are cheap and somewhat comfortable. After a bit you may want to invest in shin guards or full leg armor, but protect from impact first. As far as skills go- don’t worry just ride. One of my friends can’t hop yet and he just did his first race ever today- a cyclocross race with a bit of muni like stuff in the middle- all against bikes. He finished dead last with the biggest smile his face could hold. Ride and enjoy.
A DX muni for $130 is worth it. If you decide you want something else down the road you can make someone else a great deal on it. Unikarma is good.
Forums are fun, but pale in comparison to riding. Don’t waste time here that you could spend riding. Don’t get discouraged or compare yourself negatively to others. Just get out there and have a good time.
Torker DX’s are virutally bomb proof, and at your height it’s a good idea to go stronger than lighter at this point. Don’t worry about what others are doing, just ride with a smile (safely, of course).
