Yeah, I mentioned this record to my brother as being a really easy one for
us to break. Now, in fairness to Lars, he didn’t exactly set out to create
that record on that particular day (if I am not mistook). Moreover, he had
ridden over 2,000 miles in the preceding weeks and could certainly have
been a bit tired at that point (or he could have been in top shape as a
result of his previous weeks of riding). Anyway, averaging 12mph when
riding and riding for 16 hours (breaking for the other 8) would allow a
decent rider to hit 200 miles with relative ease. I imagine the upper
limit for 24 hours on a Coker to be much closer to 300 miles (a really
unpleasant day of riding nearly non-stop on a flat course, averaging
14mph, breaking for no more than 3 hours). Obviously, the rider in this
attempt would not be heading back for more on the very next day (or week),
as Lars was hoping to do. This would be a real day of punishment. I would
gladly accept cash from anyone who doubts that I could hit 250 miles in 24
hours (I don’t work much in summers, since I am a teacher, so I could use
the funds!). Of course, I have no idea where a good track or riding area
is. On that subject, the NY City Century ride is coming up Sat. 9/8/02
(8/9/02 for non-Americans). I am definitely aiming for all 100 miles, tho
I am not planning to do it in less than 7 hours – there are some serious
hills in this ride!
Keep on keepin’ on!
