So here I am at school looking to rent a house that is 2 miles off campus. Now I know there are alot of folks that would say uni in but I am prity set on getting a single speed for the haul into campus and doing some XC stuff while I have it.
This is giong to be the first real bike I’ve ever bought so I figured I would ask for some advice. I’m looking to spend arround $500 maybe a little more if thats how the chips fall.
So what should I look for in a good single speed. From what I’ve heard on the streets Surly is making some quality parts and a used one might be just what the Dr ordered if I can find one. I really am fairly clueless on this one but dont want to buy crap because I can see my intereset in it picking up.
So any singel speed bandits out there that can help me?
I don’t know anything about single speed bikes but I have decided that if I ever get myself a new mountain bike it will be a single speed rigid. Before I really got into unicycling I was goign to save up for a dually. Unicycling has changed me.
Surlys are good stuff. I know they guys and Dave from Surly even rides a muni. That said, I don’t have a Surly bike. I was saving up for one when I got bit by the muni bug a couple years ago. I’ve had some other Surly products though and I recently bought a staianless Surly hip flask, though I haven’t used it yet.(Note to self… buy some booze…)
I’ve been rockin out on a Bianchi track bike fixed gear for the last four years now. The commute home from work tonight was -10f…brrrrrrrrr.
On-One bikes are good too, and I think they’re pretty affordable even with the shipping.
i rode a Surley 1x1 Rat Ride for 2 years,it was good to me.my knees eventually felt like they were going to pop and i wanted to go faster so i sold it and bought a Surley Cross-Check.
you can turn any MTN. byke into a single speed with the Surley Singulater but i know, its not as cool.
I have a 1X1 and it rides just like any other steel frame bike. I don’t like rigid, too hard on my wrists, shoulders, and neck. I run an old Marzocchi Superfly air fork, 65MM travel. The only complaint is with those cheapo free wheels (Shimano, ACS). Some people would get lots of time out of them, mine would last a month before feeling all gritty. White Industries makes a sealed bearing free wheel that is supposed to be nice, and rebuildable. I went with a King hub cause the WI were not available at the time. SS parts selection is there so theres always an upgrade you can make if neccesary. I’d say go for it.
