180 uni spin (surprise surprise)

As my name implies I am a novice at unicycling, and am having trouble landing one of the more fundamental unicycle tricks. The 180 uni spin, now everyone has got through this a million time. But for all the advice I’ve read and other stuff, none of it seems to help me. I guess I’m just a slow learner. Anyway heres my problem. I videod myself just to see where I’m going wrong. Everyone seems to say its that you don’t have enough confidence and that your not committing. My video seems to say otherwise. I have enough gumption to flick my legs in, but my problem is that I don’t get enough height, every single time I’m just barely clearing the wheel giving me very little time to get my feet back in. I have been at this for over a month, and I’ve put a good many hours, but I still can’t land it, what frustrates me the most is these people that say they learned it about 30 minutes, and its taken me over a month and I still can’t get it. IT’s REALLY FRUSTRATING

sounds to me like the only advice anyone can give you is to jump higher… maybe try kicking your legs out to the side more. Good luck

or dont throw your feet out pull them up thats what i do

Haha I’m having the same trouble.

I think i’m just a slow learner. :frowning:

I only just got my first one down last friday and you dont actualy have to flick your legs out much since its only a 180. Also what i tried is just doing a 180 then smacking my feet in as fast as i can to hit the spokes(not too hard though) So that i could get the feel for kicking in. At the start just jump about up to the crown i think i did so you have enough time. Sorry i have only just come on so you might have posted the video on the video section but can u give me the link so i can see what you do?

I landed my first one like a few days ago- you really need to flick youre legs in as quickly as possible

i just learnt day in a few minutes

compress the tire to jump higher thats what i did

and keep trying

The problem is, is no matter how hard I try I can’t jump up to the crown of the unicycle. It’s a large height issue, I made a video and I don’t even come close to the crown.:frowning:

I might not be any help but perhaps if you post the video people who know what they’re doing could be more assistance?

here is a video of me doing it

hope it helps:)

Your bouncing seems a bit weird, almost like you’re not very comfortable with hopping around. I’d bet that if you can get over that, you can do a consistant unispin.

I’m now at the stage you are too - I’ve learnt to unispin, stopped riding my 20" for a year and a half and can’t bring myself to hop properly now.

Yea I don’t do sif that much so not that comfortable

but that was my first unispin did it in a few minutes

Can you jump that high if you’re jumping off the ground? I expect you can, so then you should also be able to do it jumping off the pedals. The problem is that it’s difficult to jump with exactly equal force on both feet so the pedals stay level.

Try just jumping off the pedals and landing on the ground. Don’t spin the uni and don’t worry about where the pedals go. Just see how high you can get.

After that, work on no-footers. Jump off the pedals and land back on the pedals. Start small and work on it until you can jump up to the height of the crown and land back on the pedals.

Then - go land the unispin.

hey I want to thank you guys for the help. Also tmoyer thanks for the advice. Actually I’ve gotten very good at that. I can do no footers very well. I can kick my feet way out and land them back in. Today I had one foot completely on the pedal and the other foot just nicked it. I’m a slow learner, but I’m pretty sure I’m going to start landing them soon. I’ll post a vid once I get it…thanks guys.

just snap both legs back in as quick as you can, even if it’s on the cranks, that’s what i did and i learnt to control it and get better technique. it really helps once you land your first one, no matter how sketchy it is, you get the feel for landing 1 still. good luck!

Nice - it sounds like you’re ready. I expect you’ll land it soon.

I landed my first unispins to seat-in. It’s a bit easier that way. You have to start with the seat facing backwards, of course. Once you get a few that way, then you’ll have the confidence to get both feet onto the pedals when trying them SIF.

It took me 2,5 years to learn it

tmoyer I think your slightly physcic I just landed my first 9 uni spins SIF 15 minutes ago  The funny thing is, I would have been failing for the next 12 months if not for my mom. My mom actually solved the problem. She was videoing me doing them and she goes Hunter (my name) your not spinning the unicycle in a full 180 degrees. I started spinning it a little harder and it eliminated all of my old problems. Another thing was is my body seemed to flail, now it stays centered over the unicycle and I can land a unispin about 1 out of 3 attempts. Oh and also I land my spins on the pedals and not on the cranks, but about the first three spins my left foot did rest slightly on the crank. My mind clicked and now I can land them…SUCCESS. HOORAY, I am so happy. THANKS GUYS A WHOLE BUNCH.

Oh I wanted to ask you guys something, I for some reason knew I was going to land a unispin today so I had my mom video me. Well I only had about two minutes thirty seconds of video and in about the last 20 seconds I got a really borderline uni spin, I jumped flicked out and landed slightly on the pedals. I hopped twice sideways trying to gain composure, but I then fell off. The video ran out of film and I landed my first real uni spin about a minute later. so here is the Q: should I count that first partial unispin as my first uni spin? Because then I have it on video. Kind of a dumb question, but I’m really excited because of my landed uni spins.
