13 hour mountain bike race - Leesburg Virginia

Just heard about a really cool 13 hour mountain bike race called the Bakers Dozen, which will be taking place in Leesburg, Virginia on April 19th, 2008.

It would be great to get a few teams of unicyclists together for this race, so is anyone in the area interested? From what I hear it may be cokerable. I might also do this solo because it would be quite the challenge and would help train me somewhat for RTL.

Description from: http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=5576

Event description: The Second Annual Leesburg Bakers Dozen is a 13+ hour Mountain Bike Race starting at 11:00am April 19, 2008. The event will be held on a private farm overlooking the Potomac River 3.5 miles north of Leesburg Virginia. This event has been designed to be fun for all racers, family and spectators. We will have bike demos, post race meals and entertainment, and Shimano sponsored kids races. Acces for spectating has been improved.

Course description: The 2008 course has been changed from the 2007 course. We have added more singletrack, lengthened the course, and removed some of the field riding. Total course length for 2008 will be approximately 7.6 miles. Due to these changes, the course will be run 40% in the same direction as last year, 40% opposite direction, and 20% new singletrack. We are very excited about the changes and feel we have left in the best aspects of the trails. The course is made up of small rollers, not a lot of climbing, but plenty of semi-technical challenge in the form of rocks, roots, and small ledges. This is a fast course, but has been designed to accomodate all skill levels, from Beginner to Expert.

Pre–Riding: There will be 2 pre-ride opportunities prior to race weekend which will be announce at a later date, and hopefully scheduled around agreeable weather conditions. All participants will be asked to sign a liability waiver prior to prerides.

The course also will be available for pre-riding Friday April 18 at 12:00. Please note: The course is located on a private, active farm. The trails are closed to the public aside from race activities. In order to ensure future events and rides, please do not attempt to “poach” the trails prior to or after the event.

Directions: Event will take place approximately 3.5 miles north of Leesburg Va.

From Leesburg: take 15 North towards Point of Rocks Bridge for 3 miles, ¼ mile past Whites Ferry Road, turn right on Farm Lane.

From Maryland: Cross Whites ferry. Once in the Commonwealth, take Whites Ferry Road to 15. Turn right on 15 and go ¼ mile, turn right on Farm Lane. OR Cross Point of Rocks Bridge, stay on 15 south for 8.1 miles, turn left on Farm Lane.

If the course is only 7.6 miles, how can it be a 13+ hour ride? Are they doing it multiple times? Also, the start time is 11am, so that means it goes past 12am the next morning???

Yeah multiple laps, I believe the results are based on how many laps your team does in 13 hours.

Yup, if it starts at 11am it will go until midnight.

Camping is allowed that weekend on the farm it is being held at for free as well. This would help with getting up early for the race and having an area to stretch/rest if you were on a team.

April 19 - Unicycle Fredericksburg

Sounds like fun but I can’t come–we’re doing an all-day unicycle meet in Fredericksburg, VA on the same day. wish I could come…

Update:

We have 3 riders (including myself) interested so far. I am emailing the organizer to see about whether we would be entered in the single speed/fixed category or if we would need our own category. Depending on interest maybe we can get a discount or have our own prizes or something.

This will be fun!

Joe’s event will also be fun, so if you are in the area you should try to make it to Fredericksburg or to Leesburg.
