10 : 1 Rule

Have you noticed the 10:1 rule? For a thread to have legs, it has to have at least 10 views for every post. If not, it quickly drops off the front page. The most leggy threads far exceed the 10:1 rule. It doesn’t take long to tell if a thread is going to be a tenner, a ten plusser, or a failure.

There is a real dilemma once you have started a new thread. Should I keep look, look, looking, and post, post, posting, to ensure it keeps ahead of the 10:1 rule, or should I cast my fledgling thread out of the nest and let it splat or fly on its own merits.

I hope there are at least ten of you who will look at this post.

Pretty please. :):):)

Does anyone remember what MR’s count was?
I’m sure in the very beginning it was worse than 10:1 however it seemed to be doing fine as of late.

Yay! We’ve surpassed 10:!.
Oops, I’m tending my thread. Sorry. Take it away guys!

MR was just shy of a quarter of a million posts when it got pulled (somewhere areound 248,000).
I don’t remember the view number, sorry.

I’ve found that often times one the original poster replies within the first 5 or so posts that can kill a thread.
However it can also be a plus. Say for instance if the two of us continue a conversation on about this trend that can invoke more responses.
However on the other hand I like to not post right away in my threads and let others post to get a conversation started, then a few posts later I will chime in with my opinion of the original topic.

You think there must be 10 views, but I think it must be only 5. so far, that makes two different views.

Won’t someone take the view that it must be four? Or six? C’mon, let’s get this thread rolling!!!

Billy

I noticed that rule a couple years ago and I think about it quite often when I’m browsing the forum.

The “You laugh, you lose” thread has a 40:1 ratio and seems to be doing fine. Sure, it’s dropped off of the front page a few times, but has expanded quite nicely none the less.

That’s to be expected, I suppose, considering the nature of the thread. People like looking at funny pictures;)

For the most part, your rule holds true.
