where to find a 22 inch wheel uni?

Hi,

I am looking to get a decent 2nd uni (my first one is a Norco - piece of
crap). After much careful trials I have decided that the 20" is a bit too
small for my liking and the 24" a bit too big …

so, where can I find a 22" wheel uni that won’t cost the earth (or, could
I get a 24" uni and find a 22" wheel to put in it)? I am looking to spend
no more than say $300 US all told.

Or should I get a 20" and put a big stinkin’ tire on it?

I’ve heard 22" unis exist but haven’t seen any.

thanks for any info!

Mark

They exist in sears and J.C. penny catalogues. Gor for the 24, you’ll get used to it, and find that it will be a pretty fun uni too.

Mark,

Believe me, you don’t want to get a non-standard tire setup, the
unicycling world is already too
full of non-standard equipment that’s really hard to find. If by “After
much careful trials…”
you meant unicycle trials, I’d suggest a 20" with a big tire.

Out of interest, are you the only unicyclist you know of at Uvic or are
there others around as
well?

Do You Yahoo!?
Great stuff seeking new owners in Yahoo! Auctions!
http://auctions.yahoo.com

sorry to resurrect an old thread . . . . but in case any of yall are interested, we have got 22" wheel BMX bikes recently going. the time might be right for some custom 22" unicycles . . . .

http://www.ridemonkey.com/forums/f61/22-inches-love-feels-just-right-237841/

we just need 22x47mm and 22x2.5" tires

hmmm, I guess 22" is more needed to fill out the quiver than a 650b :stuck_out_tongue:

*says the guy with a 32" wheel

Are we talking 451mm?

No, the rims and tires I have, and have seen, are 456/457 bead seat diameter.

These are the 22 X 2.2 tires:

And here’s a wheel I’m building right now:

Another shot of the Velocity rim. I have a stack of these in my living room, so if any of yall are interested, lemme know.

Do you know the outside diameter of the wheel with that 2.2" tire?

I might be interested in one of those rims in the spring.

But really…

See two spoke bike forum under unicycles for a discussion of 22 inch unicycles and tires posted 12/28/2011 but my two cents, why would anybody want a 22 inch odball unicycle.

Why would anyone want a unicycle?

Should be close to 22", but I’ll measure it to be more precise.

it’s simply a choice, an option.

i frankly think it’s odd not to try it. the difference between a 20" and 24" wheel is pretty huge. it just makes sense that 22"s will work for some people.

Huge in what sense? I got a 26er when I’d been able to ride my 20 for about 6 weeks, and yes it was a big step, but far from being an insurmountable one (I’m sure a 24 would have seemed fairly straightforward), and now nearly 2 months later I’m very happy on the 26. Can’t think of any circumstance in which I’d choose to ride a 22 rather than either. If I had to pick just one size to own it would be a tough call, but if I was picking between 20, 22 and 26, the 22 wouldn’t make the shortlist.

About the only people I can think who’ll find a 22 a revelation are those too short to ride a 24. Otherwise it’s an interesting novelty - I can see why people on these forums would want one, but it makes no practical sense (if we start from the perspective that any unicycle makes practical sense).

i’m just saying that a 20" wheel feels a lot different from a 24" wheel. 4 inches diameter is a lot.

i’m not talking about “revelations” or genius inventions. it’s simply a size option.

Look at it this way

There is a moderately strong movement in the mountain bike world where people are using 650B wheels (27.5") They claim it is a sweet spot between 26 and 29" wheels.

29 is only about 11% bigger than 26 while 24 is 20% bigger than a 20.

I never really liked the 24" size for anything. too big for freestylish stuff (for me) and to small for muni or anything else (for my likes and trails)

20" feels OK but I think I would be more comfortable on a slightly bigger wheel.

I want to try a 22 but need to sell off some unused unicycle bits first. I am getting a bit of a collection.

@cmc: you wouldn’t want to trade for a used but round and true KH24 rim a couple tires and a new Nokian 24x3 DH tube would you? If not I will wait till spring.

I am sort of wishing I didn’t sell my 07 KH20 frame since I think it would fit a 22" wheel nicely.

On a tangental subject the wheel size we are really missing is 32" I am having a lot of fun with that wheel size.

I hate to sound like an old, out of shape wimp… but…
I want a smooth transition between the 20 and the 24.
I was riding the 24 months ago. I don’t know what went wrong… other than FEAR after falling and knocking the wind out of my sails more than I wanted… and bruising my hip so it looked like a goose egg… I’m fairly happy with the improvement after going back to the 20", but I’m still having a TON of trouble freemounting the 24". If I can’t get the freemounting, the riding is so frustrating I get discouraged.

I want to move to a bigger wheel.
I’m thinking if I could take a smaller step BETWEEN the 20" and the 24" it would be really helpful.

Thanks for your help everyone.
All comments are appreciated!

Thanks!

OHhhh! Posted This in the WRONG place!

The Sun XL is 22.5 inches in diameter. I love mine.

I have a big wide 29 (622x85ish) and a little skinny 32" wheel (700mmx32)

Both measure about 31 3/4" but they are worlds apart in how they feel.

I am sure the Sun XL is fun but would be much different in feel to an actual 22" (457mm) wheel.

I’ve never ridden a real 22", but I also have a 20" Sun Flat Top and a cheapo 24" Torker with normal non-fat tires. The Sun XL rides as you would expect - slightly bigger than the 20" and slightly smaller than the 24". There a few differences in how it rides compared to both. The big tire ads a lot of gyrating mass and the width of the tire is affected more by road crown. The extra tire mass gives it a confident and controlled feel and I feel comfortable cranking the pedals super fast on it. It is more difficult to idle due to the mass of the tire, but it is really easy to hop in place on it. It is a ton of fun for a novelty unicycle and I prefer it over my 20 or 24 for messing around in the cul-de-sac. It’s great for one or two mile rides as well.
