The Beginners "Today I..." Thread

Can I revive this for us noobs? Today I rode over bumps and also over loose gravel…

Unusually, the gravel was a very stable slow ride.

Today I rode about 3 miles of trail and even conquered a teeter totter .
Now I need to rest  !!

Today I . . .

Today I . . . signed up to a Unicycle forum to learn more before i buy my first one wheeled ride. I’m a big boy at 6’ 280lbs. I like the Nimbus II ISIS but I can’t decide between 20" and 24". Any suggestions, oh wise ones.

24 all the way for size and weight

Hey all. Today I joined your wonderful forum. I’m a 58 y.o. level zero. A week or so ago I got my new Nimbus 26" muni. I have it here in my office. The hallway has been great, I can keep a hand on each side and pedal back and forth pretty well, but my landlady doesn’t like the tire marks on her wallpaper. There’s not much room in my office so I guess I’ll take it home and let my wife and kids laugh at me. I got it for the conditioning aspect and I’m surprised how much physical effort it actually takes.

Welcome to the forum fellow noobs, Fun king and Logan!

Logan, the Nimbus II is great. I got one for Christmas and it seems awesome for as long as I’ve ridden it…

Today I freemounted and rode 25 revolutions with two turns thrown in as well…

I vote for the 24" since you’re tall enough. You’ll probably like the extra speed once you figure out how to ride it.

HopHophopHopHopHop

Today I hop hop hop hop hop hop hop hopped after freemounting and rode off.

And yeah Logan, I’m 5’7 and learned on the 24. You at 6’ should be just fine.

Awesome. Thanks for the tips. I’m gonna go with the 24" and wrist guards cause I think I’m gonna fall down . . . . A LOT!!!

24 all the way. I am 6’ and weighed in at 220 it turned out to be the perfect starter for me.
Keep practicing and you will drop weight in no time. I still eat and now weigh in at 180+ thats only after 8 monthes of having fun and getting stronger.

Peace,
DhEXED

No longer quite a newbie, but over on the other brag thread they’re busy doing 540s and backflips, so can I butt in here? My brags are things a newbie should be able to aspire to in a few months (it’s less than 3 months since I managed 100m without UPD).

Yesterday I rode, hopped a 180, rode, hopped another 180 and rode off.

I see a lot about height and weight in here, if I get the 20’’ down really well, I think I’d like to expand my collection and try a different sized wheel (long way down the road from now =P ) For someone about 5’7’’ to 5’8’’ and around 140, what would be good? Is a 24 too big?

24 certainly not too big,
just different

you 'd probably manage a 26 fine even, but the feeling is very different.
a 20 is great to learn the basics on. from there, adapting to new sizes its not like starting from scratch,
the muscle memory is there , you just have to adapt a little

Na. You can ride any size wheel all the way up to 36". You’ll have to decide what kind of riding you want to try next. If you want to go fast, you’ll need a big wheel. If you want to go off road, you’ll need a mid-sized wheel with a knobby tire. If you want to do freestyle tricks, stick with what you have. If you want to do street tricks, you’ll need a trials unicycle. Once you learn to ride, there are tons of options. I love the variety.

At 5’9" I went straight from a 20" to a 26" - was quite a contrast, but not too difficult - managed to ride the 26" straight away, though freemounting is a lot harder. Not that I think height has all that much to do with it. As others have mentioned, it all depends what you want to do - though you’ll probably end up with a whole stable as I suspect I will. I thought I’d go for the 26 rather than 24 as it was more what I needed, but with a bit more experience I reckon I’ll also want a 24 at some point. Right now I’m wondering whether to get a 29 or a better 20 (for hoppy stuff).

I am also about the same size, however a bit heavier, but I started with a 24 and when I was able to get going a bit I switched to a 26. I was glad that I did, and I liked the ease of going a bit further.

I managed to start using the kerb today! I’ve just picked up my unicycle again, after I got it last Christmas I could ride about 100m after using something to hold on to as I started, for some reason I didn’t carry on with it, but I’m determined to be able to ride it properly!

Took it down to a car park tonight and tried to ride it again, it was hard but I managed to ride about 30m and do the kerb start!! Woop!

Today, I rode up to a small “curb” (~ 3" ledge) Hopped off of it, and then hopped back up. Watch out stairs, here I come!

Today I took the new 29 for it’s first “real” ride. I just started seriously riding again this summer after several decades away. It’s quite different from the 20 and 24 but It was Awesome! wow were my legs shaking after just a couple of miles. Now I need to learn to mount without a human post. LOL.

It’s awesome isn’t it? I love my nomad 29, for me it’s the perfect balance of size and control.
