Next time we do this, we should check the availability of lodging/camping before we commit to a location. Too late to change things now, but there are a lot more options in Roanoke for staying the night. The only hotel within 15 miles of Douthat is a luxury resort that is $350 per night. I'm willing to share my campsite Friday night, but I don't have a solution for Saturday night.
@Ben - I'll be checking in Friday afternoon, so I'll be looking to ride Friday. I really want to test ride a 29-inch and a 36-inch, even if just in the parking lot. I'll be bringing the only 2 unicycles I've ever ridden - a Nimbus Blizzard Trials and my Nimbus 24" Muni.

There are still campsites available in the horse loop (Beaverdam area) if you don't mind camping with the horses nearby. You have to call them directly to book these sites.

Yup, Horse Loop, also walk in and check for cancels, but really we can add people to our sites and park the cars elsewhere, the campground is so busy they won't have to do head counts.
Also, there are other campgrounds nearby, you just need to check on availability, PLUS, you can camp in the George Wahsington National Forest anywhere there is a turn out. Yeah, more planning would be nice, but we are doing this during prime season, so even three months out would be tough to find space. There are tons of options with a short drive, all the exits from the two Freeways have small hotels.

I just called the reservation center. Of the 14 horse sites, only one is booked for Saturday night. Since the rest of the campground is full, they allow anyone to book a horse site so it will not likely be full of horses. They said if you book a horse site and another site opens somewhere else in the campground you can switch without a fee.

A site just opened up for Whispering Pines, but its only for Friday night. I cancelled that reservation and will be staying in the Beaverdam area both nights. Since I'll have my family with me, I didn't want to switch campsites on Saturday.
Anyway, if others are staying in the horse loop, let me know. Hopefully, it isn't too far of a trek over to Whispering Pines. Unless Ben wants to transfer over to the Horse Loop, too. The Beaverdam area also has electric/water hookups and its the same price.

Big question: Do we want to move all of the reservations to the Horse area? It is secluded...we would have enough space for everyone. We probably need to decide soon as these spaces will be gone quick.

I think it makes sense for everyone to stay in the same area. The Horse loop is actually a good location for the trails.

I just changed my reservation to the Equestrian Campground ![]() The reservation lady said that there are twelve spaces left as of March 30th 12:30EST, so if you are going to come, go ahead and reserve now. Early arrivals on Friday should try to block some spaces. I may get up there as early as 2pm on Friday, though 4-6p is more likely; ya know, herding cats... ![]() Quote:

Ben - My total will likely be 2-4 people. Can I share your site? If not, I will reserve one.

I'll make reservations here shortly. We're still looking into cancelling at least a portion of the last day of scout camp so we can make it up there at a reasonable hour Friday. I'm currently aiming at staying Fri and Sat nights.
