i think Mutiny Bike's 'Stoked On Being Pumped' (SOBP) is a good example. they go out and film a big DVD and release it but after a a year or so they release the sections onto their vimeo account as most of the riding is no longer as exciting as it used to be when it was released on DVD. they then start filming for a new DVD (Lets get mystical (LGM) is online now too) around the time the old one is put online. they also make the occasional small online video just to keep up interest. i think this would be the way to go.

As long as people acting like those who upload Defect on youtube complete, why should a producer had interest to invest a lot of money and even mor time to do a great DVD which end then finaly again on youtube.
Jess Riegel did the DVD project for the Unicon in Denmark for example. He came over form the US and film a lot and did an amazing editing and we hand it out for free / donation option but nobody was spending a cent for it

The option to use mixed footage filmed by the riders will also not lead to the target of an smooth and awesome DVD as you expect it.

So once there will come the next big unicycle DVD, support it well and respect all the work and mybe then some more will start again to produce big stuff.

Musicians make their money today with live shows, not with CD production...

lack of free time, money, and support mostly with a bit of unconcern.
i got tired of making it as it didn't seem to work out as i planned. i still have tons of unused footage on my computer though, but i'm not sure what will happen with it as it quickly bacame obsolete. maybe i should wait a few more years till it gets totally vintage lol.
also releasing a dvd is a step backwards imho. why having a hd camera, if i release the stuff in sd?... but then releasing it on blu-ray would be just silly right now. i guess it's just my stupid idea so i might be wrong...

i'm pretty sure i won't be making a dvd or anything big in the near future except for the upcoming EUC video.

Those are actually great points Jim. Especially with the quality change. Sounds like I might just have to wait for the sport to actually catch up with the rest of the world and vice versa.

Internet videos have killed the market for this sport with DVDs. Dan profitted on his first two DVDs, I believe, he told me, but Defect was rough. If the best riders would break into teams and stop releasing online footage for free we could see the market expand. Since professional DVDs look much better than any video on youtube or Vimeo. Anything can go on those sites and will not be taken as seriously as DVDs. I look forward to releasing internet videos since I'm not at the top anymore, but 3 years ago it was a different story and I got a lot of heat for claiming no more internet videos. This was why, I wanted to grow the market. It's good to see people are starting to come around to this idea now. Sure internet vids help a small community get better, but it doesn't grow the community like DVDs. We all do like our instant fame though.

You need an actual market to try to really turn a good profit. You can make some money, but it is hobby profit, just some extra. Trying to make money from extreme unicycling is like trying to make money doing any other outsider activity. You can make some basic money, unless you are one of the lucky few that really get out there.. and that is usually money from a company that is usually not Unicycle related.... the point for the Unicycle dvd is actually for us, the Unicycle community... your only gonna sell a couple hundred, maximum. Most peoples average job earns them way more money than the profit they get from selling a dvd... sure they can make a couple extra bucks on the side, but it seems like some of these people, Jim, Raphi, whoever, actually enjoy making videos, making money or not. That is more why you would make a Unicycle dvd than really trying to turn a profit... because like I said, your profit from extreme unicycling is pretty limited.
