essay on unicycling
hey, I just wrote an essay on unicycling and what with who else to share it with than people who can relate right? Any feedback both good and bad is highly appreciated.
One man one wheel
It was a typical day; I had just come out of school and was on my way home. Out of the corner of my eye I caught a large car following very close to where I was on the sidewalk. At first I thought it was a police car trying to get my attention, as if I had done something wrong. However, it turned out to be a car with a family in it laughing and trying to take a picture of me. I figured they had never seen a person riding a unicycle before.
I remember the summer of 6th grade, when my bike broke. My mom generously offered to buy me another bike, but before I could accept her offer my brother suggested I get a unicycle instead. When I first received my unicycle I was overjoyed. However, by the end of the day, my hand was covered with splinters from holding on to the wooden railing while trying to balance on the unicycle. I was about to quit but then I saw my brother riding his unicycle with ease and expertise. I realized that I wanted to ride like my brother was riding. So for the next week, I practiced every day in the hot scorching summer sun for three hours and by the end of the week, I could almost reach the end of my short driveway.
Unicycling has become an immense part of my life. I now ride my unicycle wherever I go. I ride it to friends’ houses, the park, fencing practice, and to school. I occasionally go to Long Island to unicycle off-road. I even once participated in a 20 mile unicycle marathon.
Whenever I bring my unicycle anywhere people always want to try riding it, thinking it will be easy. However, none of them can stay on for more than one second. After their first attempt most people give up and never try again. I understand their frustration in trying to ride the unicycle because it wasn’t until my long hours of practice that I put into riding it that I succeeded in doing so. It gives me great sense of pride to know that I put my mind on something long enough on what most people give up on their first try.
My unicycle is a reflection of me. People may at times assume I am somewhat comedic with my unicycle, but in truth the unicycle is proof that I am disciplined and determined. I am confident that I can bring the same kind of determination into whatever I do.
