Based on the video a few things are obvious: - If the cyclist was doing anything to alert the attention of those officers, they had about 5 seconds for it to happen and for him to put his hands back on the handlebars and right straight, and try to avoid the tackle. - The intent was not to stop the cyclist, it was to tackle him. - If the cyclist was riding dangerously, tackling him to the curb and inventing a bunch of charges is still not exactly appropriate. - Several of the things the officer(s) stated in their reports were clearly untrue (no traffic, cop was not assaulted except possibly when trying to arrest the guy, cop was not knocked down). That's pure, unadulterated perjury. Also it makes every other detail in the report suspicious. It's very easy for cops to commit crimes and get away with them. Everything from speeding to driving drunk to murder. All you need is a few "buddies" on the force. Or a culture that frowns upon snitching. Sheesh. You wish cops would be more proud of having an honorable tradition, which they mostly do, but this crap happens all the time. Without that video, this guy might still be in jail. I honor the vast majority of cops who do their jobs honestly and risk their lives to protect us. But cops who are criminals, to me, are worse than non-cop criminals. And they have access to way more crime if their colleagues look the other way.

We need our public defenders to remain conscious of the fallibility of our "officers of the law." Let's hope this consciousness becomes more widespread.

I do disagree with the first twofivefix paragraph. The think there are few bad cops, but most are honesty and try to do a good job. There was a few times in college that the campus police where cool and calm, when my mouth was running with rental cop this, rental cop that. I have learned to watch my mouth these days, most of the time. Always to the police. Check out the new campus police rides. my old stomping grounds http://www.9news.com/rss/article.aspx?storyid=98765 |

The Republican National Convention is associated with so many civil rights violations (costing NYC many $$millions still) that St. Paul made them take out an insurance policy to cover the costs of litigating all the civil rights violations. That gives the local carte blanch to violate the rights of USA citizens. Clever, huh? And have you followed how the Mineapolis police violated the rights of Rage Against the Machine (who are of course aligned with Iraqi Veterans Against the War), stopping them as soon as they got out of their vehicles to play. Rage, in a wonderful move, moved into the audience and did 2 songs through a bullhorn!!! You have to love America!!!
