They're really not that different though. I would guess people play guitar hero because of the immedaite gratification and visual stimulation it offers. Playing a real guitar requires drive and perserverance, and has a much slower learning curve. Guitar hero also offers an objective measure of your performance which makes trying to better yourself (or beat your mates) both more easy and more fun.

Still wouldn't play it if you paid me.
