Hazmat - I considered a 12", but I thought that might be going too far and besides, a 16 w/ 127's is fairly easy, which I didn't try untill I could ride SIF and backwards a bit, about a year after starting. If I started w/ that I bet I would have been riding around w/in a week or two (again, mainly from the fear factor).

F T L - for me the rounded profile of the tire on my 20 is definately easier on concrete or asphalt, but on dirt w/ small bumps like pebbles it's definately harder than my 24 (I think this is do to the flatter profile of the tire because of the wider rim in addition to the larger diameter), but the 24 is a bit scarrier on an awkward fall. I've twisted joints in UPD's that would have been no big deal on my 20 (amazing how much a difference in 4" makes).

I did ride a bit of MUni on a Qu-Ax trials w/ 145's (only like 100 ft., seat was way too low for me and had no wrenches) and could tell most of what I would attempt at my skill level would be more doable than my 24 w/ 170's

If you don't mind sharing?
I was considering a sport to do in between classes and during study breaks at my Junior College. Then I read an article that said doing ballance exercises could make you smarter and I thought anything I could do to make my classes easier would be a plus.

One day while riding my bike home I thought "This is ballance, how can I take it up a notch? Well elliminate a wheel." The idea of ME riding a unicycle seemed rediculus, but I got curious, so I satred checking it out online and saw this. At about the same time I discovered I could ride my MTB w/o hands, so I started tried to practice this everywhere I went.

I was Shocked that there was such a thing as mountain unicycling, and since I had always liked MTB, I got REALLY interested, then saw several vids of KH and thought "If I could do that even a little bit, that would be GREAT, but still didn't believe it was possible, so I became a fan.

I watched every off road and trials vid I could find, found this site, and slowly started to believe that it really was possible. By this timet I could ride w/ no hands around turns and some speed bumps. So I did a lot of research about learning, then made the plunge and got my DX.

He originally learned when he was a kid (I think 10), stopped riding when he was about 18 or 20 and restarted a few years ago. About a 30 year break.

Dad

The best option for your Dad is a 24"...and get it with 150 cranks. 165s are probably too long and 125s would be too short to learn on.
