To Brake or not To Brake, that is the question.

So, not like this really has a point or anything, but I'm bored, and figured I'd take a quick poll.

I think brakes are cool. They make your uni look bad ass, and I know that my legs are none too happy with me after a big hill without them. And if I was given a uni with brakes already on it, I wouldn't take them off.

But I've decided that hills are way too much fun to see how fast you can bomb down and/or to break your legs trying to keep a rideable pace to mess them up with brakes.

But, it's also a simplicity thing. I would love to have a nice, clean, all white, completely minimalistic house (though with a very messy wife and a one year old, that'll never happen) cuz that's what I like. So, it's the same with my uni, I'd like it as minimal, albeit as beefy, as possible. The least amount of things to break. (Though I'd LOVE to have gears, but that's another issue)

Brakes to me, since they aren't necessary, just seem like one step further towards "normal" and away from the whole reason that most of us ride on one wheel.

So, any one agree with me, or is everone in the camp of, you either have them, want them, or don't go distances with your uni?

There are no real hills to speak of around here to even need a break. I'd probably change my mind if I had a coker.

Someone want to buy me a coker?

When I win the lottery, I'll buy 25 people brand new Unicycles of their choice.

To qualify, they must write a paragraph about why they should get one.

Don't go posting now, wait till I win the lottery

The only unicycle that i have that has a brake is my coker which is a good thing considering i'm a speed freak.

I've only had a coker for a day now...as many of you know. It is rough riding down hills. I definitely wouldn't mind having a brake..but they seem way overpriced when one can do without them if they're in good enough physical shape.

brakes are for riders with no muscle strength.

Just curious, is it weird using a brake on a unicycle at first?

I have maggies on my Muni. Besides taking some of the strain off my quads on long DH's, they just look cool!

A cheap caliper brake should do fine on a coker, and are pretty easy to attach to the standard radial/coker frame. You would just need to drill one hole in the frame and hooray, affordable breaks for those downhill coker rides.

haha nice try! By that logic mtb's shouldn't use brakes either, just put their feet down like fred flinstone! On long Muni rides, conserving leg strength is a good thing, especially on steep, 5 mile downhill runs. Sure, I could (and have) done many of these rides without brakes, and my legs are way strong and rock hard!

Here's a neat idea. I would be willing to challenge you to the steepest uphill you can find, and we'll see who makes it to the top first without dismounting! We'll make it a small wager...say, $100?
