Park Service Can’t Say How Old Grand Canyon Is To Not Offend Creationists

Seen this one?

http://www.peer.org/news/news_id.php?row_id=801

It's unbelievable.

CRAZY!!!
That's incredible!

They should do side by side displays, one bible version and one science version and on flying spaghetti version...

I know from my studies at universities in areas with manycreationists that sometimes the church places folks in the geology classes to heckle faculty.

Live and let live... It's all too much for me.

Steve, check your PMs in a couple minutes...

This is wrong on so many levels. The highest being, the creationists shouldn't be offended that someone doesn't believe what they believe.

I hate this whole PC thing. Way to ruin America. Equal rights my ass.

That reads like it's going to be on Snopes in short order. I'll believe it when I read it from another independent source. That news release is full of so many loaded words that I can't call it credible.

Think so? PEER is real, but I agree that's it's rather incredible.

Rock at the bottom of the canyon is around four billion years old. That's what we were told on our tour. Then we got to touch a sample. Most rocks you can get close to on the surface are nowhere near as old (especially if you're a creationist).

I have to agree with JC and say wait until this is confirmed somewhere. I'm not buying it, but I also don't put it past the Bush administration to want such nonsense. At least nobody will die from those lies or omissions...

The way they run from Creationists, you'd think they represent some significant number of the Faithful.

But I'm pretty sure they don't.

Or maybe it's because Bush and company are Creationists. HAH! And awful representatives of the Faithful at that!

From the official National Park Service web site on the Grand Canyon.
Quote:
The Grand Canyon is considered one of the natural wonders of the world largely because of its natural features. The exposed geologic strata - layer upon layer from the basement Vishnu schist to the capping Kaibab limestone - rise over a mile above the river, representing one of the most complete records of geological history that can be seen anywhere in the world. Geologic formations such as gneiss and schist found at the bottom of the Canyon date back 1,800 million years. This geologic incline creates a diversity of biotic communities, and five of the seven life zones are present in the park.
When the NPS removes that reference to features of the canyon being 1,800 million years old I'll believe this story.

And another quote:
Quote:
How old is the Canyon?

That's a tricky question. Although rocks exposed in the walls of the canyon are geologically quite old, the Canyon itself is a fairly young feature. The oldest rocks at the canyon bottom are close to 2000 million years old. The Canyon itself - an erosional feature - has formed only in the past five or six million years. Geologically speaking, Grand Canyon is very young. (top of page)

And another quote:
Me too. It seems designed much more to appease the Hindus, indicating "the basement Lord Vishnu schist." I didn't even know Lord Vishnu installed a BASEMENT in the Grand Canyon.

Wasn't it deep enough already??!

I hope to live to the time when nobody is permitted to say anything. We will have a peaceable world then.
