After living here for 30 years I would strongly disagree, to put it mildly.
If you want a wake-up call and find out what the real Japan is about,
I recommend:

Dogs and Demons: Tales from the Dark Side of Modern Japan
by Alex Kerr

One of the best books on the real Japan, in my opinion (I have written
about 18 books on the subject and have read probasbly hundreds).
