Olympic Torch Relay

I know this is bragging, but I had to let you all know that I will get to
run a leg of the Olympic Torch Relay when it comes through Northern
California in 2 weeks. I've known about this for a couple months, but they
didn't confirm it in writing, and said they wouldn't be able to let me
know exactly when or where until approximately 3 weeks before hand. The
notification was late and I started to wonder if it was really going to
happen. But, the information and uniform arrived today. My leg is January
19 (the same day as a big Muni ride in Santa Cruz - Rats!),
12:34 PM PST, in Martinez, California.

Now I know what you are thinking, it's the first thing that came to mind
when I first heard about this: Will I be able to carry the torch on a
unicycle? Sadly, no. One of the rules stated: "No scooters, skates,
horses, skateboards, bicycles, golf carts or any other apparatus may be
used in the Torch Relay segment." I asked, unicycles came under the
category of other apparatus . There are more rules for participating in
this than there are to participate in the actual Olympics. But, I will get
to keep the torch, so there is no reason I can't get a picture of me, or
anyone else for that matter, carrying the torch on a unicycle. I'll send a
picture to John Foss for things you shouldn't do (or can't officially do)
on a unicycle.

Good for you, John. What an honor. Too bad about the narrow mindedness when it comes to unicycles. The staged photo will still be an admirable contribution to this group. Run hard.

That is really wonderful, John. The Torch will be in Seattle Jan. 23th.
The Panther Pride Unicycle team of the Snoqualmie Valley will be
performing a 45 min. show at the ceremony when the Torch arrives.

Well done! I saw something recently about nominations and so on. I can't
be there myself, but out of interest, is there anything to stop Uni riders
from going with you?

Over here in Utah there will be alot of people around the olympics and hopefully alot of unicyclers. Do you think we should go for Muni as an olympic sport?

No, the whole thing is pretty tightly controlled, and you can't have
anyone go along on the actual route with you. The list of rules is very
long and addresses more issues than I could have thought up. I'm sure they
are all based on things that have happened before though. Rather than
trying to buck the tide, I am accepting the honor for what it is and
playing along.

One of the main purposes of the IUF (International Unicycling Federation)
is to 'go for' all forms of unicycling as an Olympic sport. We're always
looking for people who want to get involved in the process. Getting into
the Olympics doesn't happen overnight. We started in 1984. Find out more:

Well good on you! I hope you post a report afterwards 'cos I'd be

Doesn't the Olympic Committee require a "One Design" for some sports with
equipment? Maybe I'm using the wrong term, but One Design gets the
equipment to where it is affordable and levels the playing field so that
the competition is between the athletes and not so much the equipment
designers.

Does the IUF need a One Design spec'd out to suggest to an Olympic
Committee?

Maybe it could have: Wheel dia. range Wheel width range Weight minimum
