I'm still struggling (internally) on whether to purchase the lower
end KH24 or a Yuni/Profile uni. I think honestly that the KH24 is a
better buy for the money. However, my concern is maintenance and parts
availability.

The bearings for the KH24 (as described at uni.com) are supposed to be
20mmX42mm and are not for sale on their site. I don't see any KH24
splined cranks for sale either. What would happen if you were to bend or
break a crank? I 'was' thinking that worst case scenario would be to
replace the sheelset with a Profile one, now that's not looking like an
option. Hmmmmm...

Bearing size, among other things, was one of the main challenges on this thing. I have to admit that I strongly wanted them to use 40mm bearings, not 42mm, due to compatibility issues with other hubs. However, because they were not able to source a 20mm ID/40mm OD bearing, it will come with 42mm. In the long run this may actually be a good thing, as other large diameter (such as ISIS) axle/hubs become available, that may work better with the 42mm size as well.

Replacement axles will hopefully also be available soon at Unicycle.com. I've been away travelling for 5 months and was totally out of the loop, but am now back and will be working on this and a few other new uni products.

One other thing: You can use Profile hubs with the production KH24 unicycle- you just have to put a shim in there. This isn't a big deal, and I'll see if I can make custom shims available. Otherwise aluminum cans cut to size will work.

Will unicycle.com (or any other retailers) be selling just the frame?
I am curious, because i already have a nice wheel, and that frame would complement it nicely.

The bearings are available from McMaster-Carr in a precision double sealed or double shielded version for about $20 each. Any bearing distributor will have these at a low price. The 20mm x 42mm size is 6004. I would be more concerned about the KH parts.

Bearings

I called a local bearing distributor today and learned a few things about the bearings we're using on our unicycles. The common bearing that most unicycles are using these days is a 6203. This is a metric bearing with a STANDARD size of 40mm o.d. x 17mm i.d. That's the bearing that is used on a Suzue hub. However, this particular bearing is also available with three different inch series bores as designated by a dash and number after 6203. The number after the dash is the number of 1/16ths of an inch of the bore.

For instance, the bearing I'm holding in my hand right now is numbered 6203-12. It is 40mm o.d. x 12/16" i.d. - or .750 inch bore. A 6203-10 would be 40mm o.d. x 10/16" i.d. - or .625 inch bore. A 6203-8 is also available which would have a .500" bore.

Unfortunately in the case of the 6004 42mm x 20mm bearing, an inch series bore is not available.

I should add that the bearings typically used with Profile hubs and axles are NOT metric, but rather an inch series bearing. They are 1 5/8" o.d. x 3/4" i.d. and 7/16" wide. The designation for this bearing is R12.

I really don't see how you can go wrong with the KH24. I've got a 26" Hunter frame with a Profile wheel, which I have ridden hard and love. But the trails closest to my home are very technical and tough, I wanted a 24" set up to get around a bit better in the rough stuff and I didn't have an extra grand laying around. Yes, I upgraded a few things but the heart of the unicycle is the wheel and frame. In this respect the cycle has been everything I'd hoped it would be.

Honestly, would you ever have imagined that you could get this much unicycle for the price? Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love my Hunter/Profile, but it also cost me twice the price of the KH.

Hello Frank,

Thanks for the reply and nice post/pics of your uni. I like the
upgrades. Are your cranks 170mm? They look shorter to me in the image.

The conditions in which I prefer and often ride are also technical
wooded areas with bumps, branches etc. Although, I do have some interest
in downhill which is one of my motivations for the KH24 setup- the brake
option. Do you use the brake on technical rides?

As I stated earlier I think the KH24 is a better buy for the money, the
caveat for me is whether or not broken parts can easily be replaced.
Kris H. (danger_uni) addressed this issue when he stated that some
replacement parts may soon be available. He also addressed the
bearing/wheelset issue (shims). I feel allot better knowing that I can
replace the wheelset if necessary.

I'll probably never bend or break a crank or a hub due to my limited
skills and style of riding, but you just never know... they might start
to rust up here during our Alaska winters.

The next conundrum...
How can I get unicycle.com _NOT_ to put (yet another) unicycle.com
sticker on my next uni. I have four unicycles now, 2 unicycle.com
stickers per, which is 8 unicycle.com stickers. I feel like a one wheel
mobile billboard. Does anyone know if they will leave the stickers off
upon request?

If someone asks where I purchased my unicycle, I can happily tell
them... (unicycle.com)

Jason, I think the likelihood of even a hard-core rider breaking those cranks is pretty low. I know they aren't quite profile and they have yet to face the time-will-tell test, but the point of the splined crankset is that they are close to the unbreakable side of things. I don't know anything about rust, and I guess if you want shorter cranks, that's something else, too.

I'm sure unicycle.com would gladly exclude the sticker upon request. Even if they don't, I recently peeled three Pashley stickers and two unicycle.com stickers off of my Muni without any trouble.

This is one of my pet peevs too. I hate being a moble billboard without doing it on my own free will. I proudly display a uni.com bumpersticker on my snowboard, and have profile and other companies stickers on my helmit.

Unicyclist.com is getting excessive with the stickers too, my friends last uni had 3 stickers on it 1 on each inside part of the fork, 1 on the seat post tube. I havent asked them to leave the stickers off of any of my orders, but hopefully they will. Like you I gladly refer people to their company all the time, but just dont like stickers on my frame.

As far as the Uni.com stickers go, just get your fingernail under a corner as soon as you get the unicycle and peel them off gently, they come right off and don't leave much in the way of residue either. What little may be there rubs right off with a finger.
I love Uni.com but I don't like the stickers all over either.

Yes, the cranks are 170's.

I only use the brake on descents. I took the brakes off of my Hunter a while ago to see if I missed them and I did, I put them back on before the next ride. We don't have anything here that even resembles mountains, but the trails have very steep descents and they help alot. Both of my MUnis have brakes.

I'm not a trials guy so I don't go looking for big drops and jumps. I take the drops I need to to clean the line on the trail. I'm a fairly big guy, 6' tall, 190lbs. and I'm not worried about breaking anything.
I really don't think you can go wrong.

Just ask- my last frame came naked, at my request. They like you being their customer and will do this without a hassle. If it makes you feel more comfortable, explain that you're going to have the frame painted.

just another note on bearings.

i noticed that the Summit Trials uni uses 20x41mm bearing so it would seem that there are now 4 sizes to be aware of.
