Spam and the Unicyclist.com forum

What is with all the spam? I appreciate that the manager removes it, but could we put in a slower approval process for new members to cut down on it? Are there "best practices" strategies to keep it off this very nice website?

+1. I recently received what seemed to be porn spam. I would remind the organisers that there are teenagers using this site and they should be protected from exposure to dodgy spam. This is a unicyclists forum and the only thing I want to read about is unicycling. Thanks scott ttocs for starting this thread.

I wish they would let people become moderators and delete the spam threads. I don't know how many moderators there are, but I'm suspecting the only person that does it is gilby. I check this site quite a bit and I'd be thrilled if I could just delete the spam threads/bots/posts instead of flagging them.

+1 to volunteering to be a moderator, even if it's just a limited role of deleting spam. I'm getting sick of all the spam and am willing to do whatever I can to help.

I'd do that too. I know I'm not a 'big name' on unicyclist but I'd be really happy to help.

I would suggest nominations for who we'd like to see act as moderators and then vote on them, but that's just me. There's some people on here that I wouldn't really care to see moderating... They shall remain nameless.

The site operators could also look in to possibly banning an IP address or small range of addresses if this spam is coming from a single IP or a small range of IP addresses. I've seen that done on other (non-unicycling) forums.

You could also set up new membership moderation with several moderators. Every new application is reviewed by at least 2 moderators and is denied if both moderators think (independently) that it's a shill account.

Ooh, I like that, make new members type five sentences about why they want to join. That could make it a lot easier to spot 'em

The easiest way is to introduce captcha (when creating new thread) or just update vbulletin to 3.8.7 (or 5+).
3.8.4 is reeeeeeeeally old and vulnerable to any kind of attack...

Another site I've been on u must be a member for 2 wks (IMO a bit much, 1 wk is more reasonable) and have a minimum of X general posts (i think it was 10) in other threads before starting your own thread.

I'd be willing to be one who deletes spam posts/threads when I see them, when I'm on the site (usually a few times per day).

I've never seen where a post can be flagged SPAM on this site w/o replying saying its spam, which just puts it to the top of the forum.

If a moderator has the ability to see the e-mail address that the spammers used to create accounts and said moderator was free to place that email address on all kinds of distribution lists, sign me up.

Lol, I'm guessing they'd be used to that by now.

As Gilby knows I have long been a fan of having a "reading" period for new members. Find threads on the topic you want to post on first; chances are one of them will have a ton of the information you're looking for. Ability to post after a few days or a week. Or maybe ability to post, but not to create new threads for at least a week. Or pass a test of some kind before being elevated to "post creator" level.

Woah. While I was writing the above, apparently somebody (Godby?) moved this thread to the Requests, Questions and Bugs forum. I've never been in here before...
