I'm pretty sure it would be automated and the new implementation I put in shows that it was. The captcha looked easy to crack. It showed the hash to the user within the html code. Knowing the algorithm used to produce that hash makes it easy for a computer to crack it which is probably what was done. It's likely that a simple search for the forum software on google would yield many sites that a spammer could then spam.

Therefore I removed the image captcha and replaced it with a simple instruction. Type the word "unicycle" in the input box. While it hasn't been long since this implementation was made, only one spam post appeared and it was a user that registered a few days ago.

For everyone replying to the spam postings, please review post #1 and #6 below:

Instead just ignore it or report it as spam. Every post has a "Report Bad Post" button that has a red triangle outline. Click it for the post and report as spam. Otherwise just ignore it.

Once it is in the trash bin you can have all the fun you want with it. The "Bad Post" Button is below the user name and looks like this:

In addition to not replying to the spam, I would also caution against clicking on any links in that sort of spam (unless you are running OS X or Linux and feel invulnerable). Spam of that sort is sometimes used to drive people to specially crafted web sites with browser exploits or other exploits that can infect your computer.

So ignore the spam and don't click the links (even if it offers free pr0n).

It used to be that spam only came in from the newsgroup, but it appears that we got listed as a site for spammers to spam on so it's mostly being posted directly on this site. In any case, over the past month, spammers have been coming to the site a lot more and creating accounts to post spam. They've been mostly posting it in the submit news forum, which is better than to RSU as it wouldn't get read as quickly and I get an email when a new thread is posted in the submit news forum, so if I'm around, I can quickly dispose of it.

Eventually I'll have to figure out if there is an identifying pattern to these that I can use to block access to them, or I might have to set up a new user approval thing that community members can approve posts made by new members.
well just disalow all new member to post anything with a curency sign for a day or so. (£,$) I dout that many new unicyclist post that in a first post

I think one time I might have accidently replied to a spam thread in RSU.

Will I be ok or should I go tell a priest?
