So true. First time I got to one of those in the US, it took me a while to understand it. Thank god my wife was doing the driving and she grew up on those.
Here in France we have tons of roundabouts. They're used to break the traffic speed (and encourage people to use the paying highways), but they're also used by local mayors who want to recycle public money for themselves: make sure it's built by a company ran by friends or supporters, and make sure you get a retro-commission on it. Yep, corruption disguised under a road safety measure...
