So just wanted to report that it is just a matter of training and getting used to the shorter cranks! After doing a ton of riding the last 2 weeks, I did my usual ride today with 127s and was cruising so fast! It was very strenuous as I was attempting to keep up with a group of mountain bikers, but I could tell how much I've progressed with the shorter cranks and in the first 30 minutes where I was really going near max speed I made every uphill and had a total of 2 dismounts! After that I was a little tired and had quite a few more but all in all it was great.

I have had a lot of training in the last 2 weeks and over half of it with the 127 cranks: I was at the Italian national championships and then the German national championships where I had 3 full days of riding at each: one day of training and pre-riding the courses (shuttle and chairlift) and uphill muni race, one day downhill race and trial and one day cross country race! I did the German downhill with the 29+ with 127s and the cross country with the 36" and 150s! Todays ride seemed easy with the 29+ and 127s: the uphills not very steep and rode almost all and the downhills seemed way less steep after doing so much super steep stuff...

But yeah, training, and especially training with shorter cranks makes such a difference!

When my 10 year-old son moved from "driveway riding" to muni, I gave him 125 mm cranks on a 24" wheel. The cranks were much shorter than what I was using, but I knew he'd get used to whatever setup I gave him. Now he's a hill climbing monster that leaves me in the dust. I agree that with practice, a rider can get used to just about anything. Starting kids on short cranks has worked well at my house.
