NEW ZEALAND - SOUTH ISLAND 8-DAY MUNI ROAD TRIP
A single-track unicycle road trip from Picton to Queenstown. December 2007

This trip is a ‘one-off’ cost price trial run to “see how it goes” road trip. We are going to hit some fantastic well known and not-so well known trails as we travel from Picton down to Queenstown. We will then use your feedback so we can develop a series of muni tours both here in NZ and overseas. Places are limited to 7 riders so if you are interested please contact us ASAP at: info@escapeadv.com.

Day 1 - Saturday – Meet in Picton at 9am for a mocha and then water taxi transfer out to Punga Cove on the Queen Charlotte track. (Note: This is as far out as we can start riding as the outermost portion of the track is closed to bikes/unicycles at this time of year).

Ride along the Queen Charlotte track from Punga Cove to Portage. 20.5kms. This is a DOC maintained, reasonably non-technical walking/biking single track.

Lunch and evening meal at own cost. Accommodation: backpackers.

Day 2 - Sunday – Continue riding the Queen Charlotte track from Portage to Anakiwa. 20kms. Our bags will be transferred by water taxi to meet us there. In the afternoon we travel by van to St Arnaud at Nelson Lakes National Park. Evening lakeside ride.

Breakfast supplied, lunch and evening meal at own cost. Accommodation: camping.

Day 3 - Monday – This morning we hit the Teetotal tracks near St Arnaud. These are a series of DOC built and maintained mountain-bike tracks of varying difficulty set in the bush on the edge of the park.

In the Afternoon it’s back in the van to Westport. Hit the streets for an urban ride in the evening.

Breakfast supplied, lunch and evening meal at own cost. Accommodation: camping.

Day 4 - Tuesday – A short drive out of Westport gets us to the Charming Creek walkway. The track includes remnants of man-made structures, swing bridges and tunnels as it follows the route of an old tram line which makes for a fun and stunning ride through beautiful native bush. 21kms return.

In the afternoon we head in the van further down the coast to Punakaiki.

Breakfast supplied, lunch and evening meal at own cost. Accommodation: camping.

Day 5 - Wednesday – Start the day with a quick blast down to see the famous “Pancake Rocks” then we load up and drive down to Lake Kaniere, near Hokitika. Today’s ride is 10.5kms along the Lake Kaniere water race, an awesome rolling track with loads of steps and gullies for extra challenge. In the evening try out some of the tracks near the lake.

Breakfast supplied, lunch and evening meal at own cost. Accommodation: camping.

Day 6 - Thursday – We drive down the rest of the West Coast and over Haast Pass to Wanaka. In the afternoon take a ride along the lakeshore on the Millennium Track. 10kms return.

Breakfast supplied, lunch and evening meal at own cost. Accommodation: camping.

Day 7 - Friday – Wanaka! Hit the infamous “Sticky Forest” and ride the awesome array of purpose made MTB tracks hidden in the forest and along the banks of the Clutha River.

Breakfast supplied, lunch and evening meal at own cost. Accommodation: camping.

Day 8 - Saturday – A final drive over to Queenstown, the adventure capital of NZ, and home to loads of great trails. This morning we shuttle up-hill and ride from Moke Lake back down to Lake Wakatipu via Lake Dispute. If you are really keen we can arrange for an optional “Heli-Muni” in the Central Otago hills.

Breakfast supplied. The trip ends back in Queenstown after our days ride.

Included: Water taxi and baggage transfers on Queen Charlotte track; all accommodation for the duration of the trip; (you will need to supply your own tent, sleeping bag and thermorest etc); 7 breakfasts; (lunch and evening meals are all at own cost); all transport and shuttles for the duration of the trip with 4x4 van and purpose made luggage/bike trailer.
(We hold DOC concessions for all the trails used on the trip).

Trip Cost (per person): Camping: NZ$890 pp; or Budget accommodation NZ$1030 pp.

Date: Saturday 1st to Saturday 8th December 2007
