I got the deity compounds and I love them! you get the best of both worlds Cool looks and light weight. They don't spin free right out of the box but they loosen up and move freely pretty quickly. They are boss.

Awesome pedals so far, pins have stayed in, grippy and really light. Ive done some big gaps and drops with them and they seem to be fine

The Deity Compounds and Nuke Proofs Electrons are the same pedals. I've been riding both brands of pedals for a while now on all my unis, not damage to the pedals or pins. I have two pair of the originals with the molded in nylon pins, that style will lose pins over time.

The only thing that has worn is the pins, which are replaceable socket head screws. All the metal pedals I have tried got chewed up by rocks and the pins would either strip out of loosen, so to have a pedal body outlast the pins is a nice change.

The Nuke Proofs are UK sourced, the Deity is US sourced, but they come from the same factory in Asia. Deity has them in purple

I use the Nukeproof branded ones on my MUni and more recently my Trials and I can only echo Nurse Ben in saying how touch these pedals are, the body resists damage that would have gouged and marked Ali pedals and the pedals have a good compromise between grip and adjusting your foot position.

They are cheap so as to be almost disposable (accept they are so tough they won't die) and super light weight at 338g! As for spindle strength I have been pushing my drop height and am landing 4 foot drops without the greatest finess in the world and my ham fisted landings/crashes have yet to break them.

I have yet to try grinding on them (or at all ) but I am sure they will last better than the soft Ali on most pedals and with the abuility to remove the pins on one side if required.

They are the best pedals I have tried and I have tried about 7 or so

Going clipless, round one:

Shoes, I went round and round on shoes for a while, tried a number of styles, looking for one that was good for hiking, but still stout enough for riding in clips. Most clipless shoes are way to stiff for hiking; carbon fiber soles are great for riding though. My plan is to find a shoe that will hike well for multi day tours in the mountains, but will still provide good support when riding. I also wanted the sole of the shoe to conform and friction with the pedal so I could have friction control like a platform pedal and flats; I plan on getting a platform clipless pedal.

I finally decided on the Pearl Izumi X Alp series, which have a unique sole design that is soft like a lightweight hiking boot AHEAD of the cleat, and medium stiff like a heavy weight hiking boot BEHIND the cleat. I did the rounds, found the Seek to be to soft, the Drift to be too meshy for year round use, decided on the Elite which has two velcro straps and a nice ratcheting buckle. The Elites are still on the soft side, stiffer than a 5.10 Impact, but way softer than my carbon fiber MTB boots. They are nice and springy though, have a nice carbn rubber sole, they are light.

Time Z Strong, platform pedals, 540gm, lots of float, enough support for a softer shoe, but if I ride a stiff soled shoe the latform is not worth the weight due to lack of contact. I did not like this pedal due to the high degree of float which made it very hard to unclip. Could get up to 30 deg of heel out before any release was possible, so kinda scary at times.

I packed up the Z Strongs and sent them back, I am now waiting on some Shimano M647 Nylon platform with the Dx redesigned release system. I've had these pedals in the older style for mountain biking, so I know they work. I'll be using some easy out multi release cleats I have left over from when Mrs Nurse Ben was still riding clipless MTB. The easy out cleats even allow a vertical release, so pretty neat eap with me being all scared of crashing and not being able to release

Ummm, that's a nice vote of confidence

I'm pretty sure it'll be fine, I just need to get comfortable with UPD's, so modifying my dismount technique.

I'm not looking for a secure attachment that replaces friction, more I am looking at reduced slippage (reduced effort at maintain foot position) and some increased leverage from being able to "pul up" on the pedal.

It works with bikes, so in theory it should work with unis.

As long as you can disconnect from the pedals fast enough (effortless) pulling can be no option i think.

Please say that you are using clips for road riding. I think for anything they would be kind of foolish.

When I raced BMX I would use clips and and when you would fall lets just say you would eat it pretty hard. Also ive noticed with unicycling that your feet move around a lot! I move the angle of my foot for turns and most almost everything.

The worst thing about clips is that you could set them so the release is loose but then your feet will come off but then you could set them so they are tight so your feet stay on but then getting out of them would be a lot tougher.

There are some good riders who use clipless and some good riders who don't. I remember seeing my first clipless pedals in the 1980's, at the time everyone was using cages and straps with a cleat that prevented exiting the pedal. Some of my hardest falls were on bikes with straps which were not designed to release, one time I ended up on my head in a ditch with the bike still strapped to my feet. And no, my ankles did not break, though one time I came out of my shoes

I'll be running the multi release cleats at low retention, so I don't expect to have release failures that cause broken ankles, though I can see instances where I'll hit the ground due to not getting a clean release. If I end up hitting the ground a lot, I'd anticipate giving up on the idea.

Actually, I would think road riding would be more dangerous because I run a higher cadence and the ground is less forgiving; though I suppose I have fewer UPD's as well, so maybe it'd be a push.

I think any fall clipped in on a unicycle is gonna suck. The good thing about falling on a bike with clips is that you can fall on your side. On a unicycle its going to be backwards or forwards.
