What's the best thing that's happened to you since 2009?

Hey Everyone,
Haven't been around here in a while. l'd love to hear some good news from old friends!

Things are goin' okay in my neck of the woods. Working hard at a job that I like. Web development and teaching anatomy. Bear is well, almost a teen! Still a good kid.

I suppose the best thing that's happened to me since I last posted was taking up the English concertina and the flugelhorn. More ways to make music is always a good thing.

Some health issues have kept me of my wheel. Someday soon again, I hope!

I see some familiar names remain on the fora? What's happening with you?

English concertina? I play Anglo - got a Marcus GD and a Jeffries B flat/F. What've you got?

Best thing that happened to me is I met a girl, got married, and got two fine sons into the bargain. Both can now ride the uni.

welcome in the group of unicycling flugelhorn players! which is the make of your instrument? (I have two: a Bosey & Hawkes and a Courtois ... each has his pro and cons)
I have had so many happy things since 2009 that I can't list all. Top of the list is my new job (with a big pay decrease! Happiness is a complex thing!).
(older of my little bear cubs is also almost a teen!)

-Jobwise, I went from level 2 hotliner to system administrator.
-reached the Pointe du Raz then the Cap de la chèvre on my treck around Britany coast (3-4 days each year starting from the point reached the year before)
-joined a Starcraft 2 micro community (very geeky but still fun)
-watched my kids growing healthyly
...
Good to hear from you again. Aren't you upset about leaving the elephant studies?

Hello podzol,

"What's the best thing that's happened to you since 2009?"

Without a doubt, TWO of the best...
1-taking up unicyling
2-joining this forum

And THAT's the truth!

Thanks podzol!
Gee.
You appear to be a MASTER of ALL trades.
I'm quite pleased to see you here this morning.
... more later.

THANKS!
Martha

Welcome back Blake. It has been quite a while and for your information should your health issues subside, the LBI Unithon is still going strong. And glad to hear Bear is growing up a fine young dude. Hope to see you both again someday.

The best thing to have happened to me is probably losing nearly 60 lbs and getting back on the Unicycle.

Cheers,
Raphael

Great to hear from so many if you!

Glad that some good stuff happened to so many of you. I got married, too. I am holding out on saying if it was the best thing or not. Congrats to you, Mikefule. On the woman, kiddos, and the Jeffries. Not familiar with Marcus...

I picked the English concertina because I want to play classical as well as Irish tunes on it. So far it hasnt let me down. I have a Morse Baritone Geordie. Excellent instrument for me. I love the baritone range There is an Irish music group that plays every week and has open doors, but mandatory playing by ear, no sheet music allowed. I cant pay by ear for cr*p so I havent attended yet.

Wobblin' :I have a New York Trumpet Company flugel, Stage 1 California model. It is serial number CA001FL, thats right, the first of the line. I called the mfg about it to make certain. Its a one of a kind because the way the 3rd valve trigger was changed after the prototype. I play the flugel on my own, like the EC, but I did make the 2nd trumpet section in the community band. I use a beat up Yamaha trumpet for that. The flugel sounds like chocolate milk. I love it. Still working on the trumpet sound. It is shrill compared to the flugel. Courtois are supposed to be very fine Flugels.

I quit my "9-5" job and now do all my work at home and even teach online. Its great to be by the dogs, save on gas, have my PJs on all day! Funny thing is, because I am happier, I am more productive and do better work. I do more and am in greater demand so I make more money. Happiness is key.

57uni, nice to meet ya. Hope to keep in touch, but I suffer from forum addiction, so I had to quit. I am indulging myself a wee bit now...

For those of you who think unicycling is dangerous: i decided to switch up my exercise routine to consider my hubby's preferences, he wont try unicycling... So I started running. Now, because of the same stubbornness that enabled me to ride unis and ults, pushing too hard running I earned one foot surgery, several stress fractures in feet, one broken tibia from abuse of a stress fracture, and now a severely inflamed disc herniation. So, DONT RUN, RIDE!!

Jjuggle, great news about fittness. You must feel fantastic. I am on a constant diet since my back wont tolerate exercise.

Zzagg, I am still working to use the elephant data. I work with some paleontologists who are trying to figure out where to dig in the bering straits for mammoth remains. Apparently there was an population that survived well into the Holocene up there somehow. Not only may the elephant poop data that I collected be used in the study, I will get to develop some interactive animations in HTML5 for the outreach component of the research if we get full funding. Very cool. I am pretty good with html5 and css3 now, i am trying to learn javascript to complete the package, but i need a big block of time to concentrate and that doesnt happen too often...

Thanks for the updates and well-wishes. Makes me really happy to hear about good people and good things in their lives!

Welcome back! And hope you will be mended soon. Don't try to rush it. Didn't you know? Running is one of those sports that gets people into cycling, not the other way around...

Best things for me since 2009?
  1. I'm not dead!
  2. Still married and loving Jacquie
  3. New job, started in '09

saw a pic of that flugel on the internet: the 3rd valve trigger is bizzarely placed ... is that what you have?
the Courtois have some drawbacks ... (not always well tuned, better play in "middle" tones), my Bosey (in fact a Besson design I think) is more versatile but it is getting old and valves "click" terribly.
on both I use "denis wick" mouthpieces that changes everything for the sound!
When in the US I wanted to test a Phaeton ... but no way to find one in bay area where I work! (I will be in New-york in march but I don't have enough dollars left to buy yet another toy).
I have played trumpet, cornet, mini-trumpet, alto and bass saxhorns, sousaphone ... and I just prefer flugels! they are so romantic!

<back to topic>
getting married is not a bad idea: I tested it 40 years ago and haven't changed my mind ever since!

Howdy howdy.

I am just here to swell my own head really.

In the last few years I have performed along side some of the best comedians in Australia and this march I will be doing my first Melbourne international comedy festival show.
Two weeks solid comedy.
I am as nervous as I should be.
Life is wonderful.
