Back Pain
Hey guys, I've been searching around for an answer to this question but I can't seem to find one so... My back pretty much feels as though someone took a golf club to it, and I'm fairly certain it's from hopping around on my Uni. I ride right foot back with my right hand on the handle, which, from what I've read, is unusual. I just want to know if any of you can tell me whether this is something I'm just going to have to live with, or if it's something wrong with my posture/technique that I can fix.

Sorry I can't help you with the pain, but who the hell said it is unusual to ride right foot back and right hand?!
I ride that way and I know many other great riders that rides that way too.. So that can't be the problem.. but you should go see a chiropractor.. because, from what you wrote, we can't help you, 'cause it has NOTHING to do with your stance..

yeah, raise your seat and end si hopping. it's useless really, you can't get much height without having your saddle incredibly low, and that's basically all a low saddle is good for....
start sif, but first take a lil break and let your back heal. when i first started hopping i did it si, and hurt my back. but that was a combo, i think, of unicycling too much and just bad form. now i only hop sif, never hop si, and never have anymore back problems. your stance is not an issue, check out that goofy stance thread or whatever Last edited by DSchmitt; 2010-07-16 at 10:37 PM. |

I don't see SI hopping as an issue either.. I have never had back problems from SI hopping.. You'll just have to bend over the right way which for some people can be pretty hard.. I don't agree with you that it's useless.. of course you can much higher with SIF but for som lines i like SI way better, for example when I'm drop-gapping I like SI alot because I have so much more control of the uni
and about the seat height, I have a seat height of 300 mm from the tire to the end of the seatpost (my legs are about 80 cm).. it is very good for both SI and SIF hopping.. well try different seat heights and see which one fits you most.. and as DSchmitt says: wait 'till your back is healed and then follow our advice

If you can't touch the floor with your legs straight start doing some stretches for your hamstrings. If you don't have good abs add some crunches. Some quad stretches are a good idea as well. Uni riders tend to have over developed quads in relation to their hamstrings.
Don't do any stretches that hurt your back. Find different stretches. A guy your age, some stretching and crunches should put you right as rain.

Sit straight up. Bad posture can be bad for your back.
