Maybe you could save yourself about 3-4" if you let the air out of the tire prior to loading!

I was thinking it was someone getting hit head on by a Mini Cooper. Kinda glad that didn't happen.

I thought someone was going to ride over a mini cooper with a 36er. Oh well, here's to dreaming.

Is there a bicycle rack available for the mini cooper?

I vote for roof or rear rack with one pedal removed

I also like kb1jki's idea. I might eventually do the same.

not sure I'm totally understanding that picture but in it I see two awesome ideas, the markings, and the clamp on the seatpost itself.

I like the clamp on the seatpost idea. That's how it's done on my drumset for both the throne height and the tom-tom height. Neither ever sinks once they're clamped, and the height is "saved" when I have to take them apart to move them. Awesome.

The top clamp is holding my handle but that is also a good idea using a clamp to "save" your seatpost setting if your setup is really dialed in.

Remember, it's not just fitting the wheel in. If your 36er has brakes like mine does, taking the seat off can be a pain (mine's a pain because of the handle vs. clamp, but that's another story). A seat with handle can take up a lot of space attached to a 36er.

That said, I'm surprised it doesn't fit in the back of a Mini. Based on your Seattle location, I'm guessing it's one of the newer, fat ones, not the "real" Minis (the mini ones).

I think mine could be made to fit in Lance Thornton's Mini (below), assuming no passenger and possibly sticking the handle out the window. The old VW Beetles could fit a 40" Big Wheel in the back, but not my 45" because it was bigger than the largest dimension of the door.

If you want to show off, of course the coolest way to go is with the MTB roof rack and have it sticking up like a big round shark fin. For better gas mileage, a rack on the back would probably be a lot better (and no surprises when pulling into the garage).

I love the original Minis. Lance brought his back from New Zealand; it has the steering wheel on the right!

I really dig the Kb1jki idea, where did you find that clamp at? That's the answer I've been looking for.

Never mind dumb statement as I now see that you have a Thule bike rack. I have already the 'base' rack for the cooper so perhaps the cooper bike rack will do the same. Otherwise I'll get a Thule.

I have a dirt ring around my seatpost that does the same job.
